And finally... Haddington gluten-free highlights: We’d chosen the historic town of Haddington as our base for our Scottish holiday due to its proximity to Edinburgh and the coast. What I hadn’t appreciated until we arrived was the choice of cafes and restaurants there that catered brilliantly for coeliacs. We enjoyed gf pizza at MazzoliattheTyneside, fabulous gf tapas and gf fish and chips at The Victoria Inn, and I was well-catered for at Carlyle House Cafe. I could even have ordered freshly made gf sushi from Haddington-based Minato Sushi (...next time!).

All in all, Scotland was an absolute winner for me as a Coeliac… with all the fantastic gf food options, plus the history, the culture, the landscapes, the castles and the beaches, my vote is for holidaying in Scotland every summer ☺️.

Edinburgh highlight #3: Sugar Daddy's Edinburgh. This warm and friendly dedicated gluten-free bakery is run by the lovely lady in blue (who is coeliac) pictured left behind the counter in the photo. We had a great chat! As well as offering an impressively large range of gluten free (plus dairy free and vegan options) cakes and cookies, they also sell savouries to take away and packaged bread from The Wheat Free Bakery (also based in Scotland). I would have gone absolutely wild with my purchasing if I hadn’t just made a bee-line straight through the leafy streets to find them after my excellent lunch at Confelicity Bakery! But I did get a delicious dark chocolate salted cookie, and the most amazing puff pastry cinnamon swirl, which we all enjoyed that evening.

Edinburgh highlight #2: Confelicity Bakery. This dedicated gluten free bakery and cafe opened in January and is run by a coeliac chef… if you’re looking for proper bread with incredible depth of flavour, this is the place to go. The staff were lovely and friendly and the door-stopper seeded sandwich felt like it nourished me from top to toe. I took away a wonderful sourdough baguette and enjoyed it toasted with butter and marmalade for my breakfasts over the coming days. And of course we had to try the sweet bakes too… the carrot, pecan and orange cake was the best I’ve ever tasted (and has inspired me to work on my own version for an autumnal bake day)!

Edinburgh highlight #1: L'etoile Salon de Tea. Run by a husband and wife team: she is coeliac and ensures there’s no cross-contamination in the kitchen; he (who was so welcoming front-of-house) is the mastermind behind their most incredible gf patisseries. Alongside their regular menu, they have an extensive gluten-free menu of French-style toasted sandwiches, bagels, salads etc. I chose a healthy salad (delicious) as I had already spotted the WHOLE ROW of gluten-free patisseries… … of course we had to try them! The pear and almond tart was astoundingly good.

The first gluten-free holiday *wow* came in York on our way up to Scotland, at Pranzo Italian Restaurants, which offer a wonderful range of homemade gluten-free pasta dishes, including gluten-free lasagne - I’ve NEVER come across gf lasagne in a restaurant before!!! Of course, I had to go for that, and it was utterly delicious… as was their amazing chocolate mousse (the chocoholic in me was very excited to see this dessert option 🤣). It really felt like they took lots of care with coeliac customers. This family-run restaurant group also has branches in Ilkley, Harrogate and Horsforth and I’d really recommend checking them out if you’re heading to Yorkshire anytime soon.

Our family holiday to Yorkshire and Scotland turned out to be a bit of a gluten-free gastronomic extravaganza! I was bowled over by the amount of gluten free choices in the cafes and restaurants, especially in Scotland. I’ll post some highlights in case helpful for anyone planning a trip in that direction ☺️ (pic shows our Chief Taste Tester having fun on Yellowcraig beach).

Yesterday, we celebrated the end of term and my nephew's birthday 🎉. He requested a very specific birthday cake: a Spanish Goxua. I'd never heard of this dessert... but I like a challenge!

Here's my gluten-free take on a Goxua: layers of creme patissiere and whipped cream sandwiched between Genoese sponge which has been brushed with an orange sugar syrup (it should have been rum but that didn't feel very kid-friendly 🤣), topped with whipped cream and a caramel shard.

Not bad for a first attempt! Big thumbs from the (non-gf) family 🤗 Of course, the children's favourite part was the caramel shard 🤣.

It was lovely to see everyone for collection on Friday. Bake days are now on pause as I juggle the day job and childcare while school's out for summer. The next bake day will be on Friday 18 September, with bakes going live to pre-order on the afternoon/evening of Friday 11 September (pop that date in your diary now!).

Hoping to test out some new bakes during the holidays, too...

Wishing you all happy gluten-free baking in your own kitchens when the heatwaves allow, and a fabulous summer!

Well, that was another crazy-hot bake day! Cooling off in the garden now with a brown butter choc chip cookie ice cream sandwich... the height of indulgence, and very delicious!

This Friday is the last bake day until mid-September, due to the school holidays. Things went a bit crazy after the bakes went live, and some sold out almost immediately... though I have managed to do a little re-stock of frozen items today, so you can still snag some delicious gluten-free bagels, brioche buns and mini-bagettes... if you're quick! 🍞🥖

Also: due to the predicted high temperatures on Friday, I'm offering a 1pm-2pm collection slot from Horningsea, as well as the usual 4.30pm to 6pm slot - just pop a note on your order to let me know which time slot you'd like for collection ☺️
