Hello from Wendi, the Director of Community Outreach here at Patriot Partners Removal. I'm the one that posts all the small stories and goes out into the community to tell everyone about the great work that our team does, and how we can help on your travels down the path of aging and transition. But yesterday I was on the other side of the table. I attended an Ask the Expert panel event that had some of our partners in the community, but I was also able to make some new connections.
What really struck me is that the Fox Valley is really a unique place to live, especially if you are a person that is living a full life after retirement. The amount of resources and agencies here to help make things easier is crazy!
One of the questions asked of the panel was "What are some of the signs to watch for to know that your loved one needs help?" Have you thought about that in your own family? The answers varied from the inability to manage their own medications reliably to frequent falls to memory impairment to not allowing visitors in the home.
Another question was "Where do we start?" Boy, that's a big question. And the answer from many of the panelists was "it depends". And it does. It depends on what your goals are, where you're struggling, what resources you already have in place, and who you have with you to help.
Aging isn't easy. But it's not a gift that everyone gets. Plan ahead, accept the help, don't rely on your family to do everything, and please, ask the questions that are on your mind. If you don't know where to start, reach out to us, to your local ADRC (every county in Wisconsin has one), reach out to your financial planner, your attorney, your neighbor, ask anyone at your medical office, but please just ask. You don't have to do it alone.
