One of the things I like about making cakes is learning about Pop Culture. Recently, someone requested this cake for a Sweet 16 Birthday party. I didn't know it was a thing, but it is. The boy band on the top of the cake are character's from Sponge Bob Square Pants, "The Boys Who Cry" who sang, "It's all about you girl, on your 16th birthday!" to Pearl the whale, on her sweet 16 birthday. I loved watching Sponge Bob with my kids and I love that this is now a theme for 16th birthdays! Happy Birthday Trinity! It's all about you girl, on your 16th birthday!

Happy Birthday Butch! Thank you for your service, sir. An all fondant cake design. This cake has been covered with dark navy blue fondant. The Staff Sargent emblem is an edible print attached to fondant. the buttons and gold trim are all hand painted with Rolkem Edible Gold dust and lemon extract.

For a little girl celebrating her 3rd birthday today. This cake is a buttercream iced cake, with fondant accents: rainbow, name plaque and fondant cake topper (number 3 rainbow with hand painted gold highlights) and decorated with purchased Bluey toys! Happy 3rd Birthday Sutton!

Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away, there was this little old cake maker who made a Star wars cake for a baby shower for her friends at church who were having their second child. This little ol' cake baker searched high and low for ideas to make a "Starwars Baby Shower Cake". The cake baker spent much time working on the cake trying to get every last detail just right. She settled for having a Blue Starwars cake. After finishing the cake, she tucked it safely into the refrigerator and tucked herself, all comfy in bed and fell asleep watching YOUTUBE cake decorating videos. (true story, not the end) If you're still hanging with the story, keep reading, it will be worth it I promise! The little old cake baker woke up at 4am and said, "I don't like the cake blue, I want to make it black, like a black galaxy cake!" So she washed her face (and hands) Made a fresh cup of coffee, and went down stairs to her Cake Room and started DISASSEMBLING The BLUE STARWARS CAKE! She worked diligently, carefully removing the decorations, gingerly taking off the top tier and scraping off as much blue icing as was necessary. And then the magic happened. She mixed some pink icing, and teal icing and purple and lime green icing and she schmeared it on the cake and it was good. (Hang with, I promise, It will be good!) Then she chilled her cakes. And then she took some black buttercream icing and schmeared it onto the cakes and she swiped and swirled and scrapped and leveled and she scraped some more and smoothed until these beautiful colors started revealing themselves through the black icing and started to look like magical, mystical swirls of color in outter space. She then took some white buttercream icing and thinned it down and splatter painted the sides of the cake to look like stars and it worked! She cut out some more fondant stars, just the right size stars and attached them to the cake. She then added the lovely Starwars Cake topper she had lovingly made and she stepped back. (Time for a second cup of coffee she thought) She snapped some photos and chilled the cake and she was very satisfied with her work! And then she boxed it up and gave it to her friends to celebrate their new little miracle with their friends! The End! Congratulations Michelle, Rocky and Shepherd!

A few weeks ago, my grandson, who is two, going on three, shows me a photo of the cake he wanted me to make for his birthday. I think this is awesome, that he knows enough to do this.
This evening, we arrived at his house while he and his parents were out. He struts in the door like a three year old should on his birthday, his mother said, "Your Nanna is in the kitchen" He replied, "Where's My Cake!" I got you covered, little buddy. Happy 3rd Birthday to my favorite 3 year old, Caleb! Nanna and Jadgi Love you!

Seeing Double
Last week, I had two special orders for two different smash cakes for two different little girls turning one. One of the customers requested the child’s name written on the cake. The other customer only requested the age writing on the cake but later texted me a photo of her baby “smashing” the smash cake. When I asked her baby's name, I had to step back for a moment. I went back into my emails (frantically) re-reading order details to make sure I didn’t make a mistake, finally emailing the second customer to be sure I had the correct name and the correct spelling on the cake. Both little girls celebrated their first birthday the same week with a smash cake. I think it only proper, I upload their cakes together. Happy First Birthday, Freya and Freya!

A Great Gatsby themed Cake for a 20th Birthday. The top tier of this cake was a white almond cake, filled with lemon curd filling trimmed in buttercream and covered in fondant, the base tier was yellow cake filled with strawberry perseveres, iced in buttercream and covered with black fondant. The top tier has been hand painted/ stenciled with edible gold luster dust, then trimmed with a hand molded, hand painted, gold braid at the base of the top tier. The base tier has a hand cut wrought iron pattern which was attached to the cake and then hand painted with edible gold luster dust. The numbers were hand cut and hand painted in edible gold luster dust. The feather decor is not edible. A cake like this can take between 20 - 30 hours of labor to produce. This is truly a special cake for a special birthday!

One cake, three different ways. Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Barfield! This is a three tiered, all buttercream iced cake iced in a rustic textured buttercream. In one photo, the cake is plain, in another photo, the cake is topped with pink silk flowers, and in the third photo, the cake has been decorated with fresh flowers.

A special cake for a little girl who loves Spirit Horse. This cake is a buttercream iced cake, with edible printed sugar sheets which have been hand cut, and finished with hand painted details (grass and birds) with lemon extract and food coloring gel.

You just takes some eggs, whip them up, add some flour, sugar and a few extra ingredients, throw in some buttercream icing and fondant and P**f! You have a cake! It’s easy!
Uh, no. It’s not that easy. Some custom cakes take a whole lot of time. This cake took over 20 hours to produce, including clean up time. The figures (The Berenstain Bears) alone took over 4 hours to sculpt. There is an internal structure supporting the nearly 20” tall cake. It is stacked like a 4 tier wedding cake. It’s resting on a 15” base cake board. The base tier of the tree started as an 8” chocolate cake filled with peanut butter buttercream icing, The middle tier is the same, only a 6” layer. The 3rd tier up is a 6” round yellow cake with strawberry buttercream filling. The 4th tier, the greenery on the tree has been made with rice krispy treats, covered with buttercream icing, then covered in fondant. The cakes were iced, filled, and stacked and then covered with rich dark chocolate ganache for stability and then covered with fondant which was then textured, hand painted and accented with edible pedal dusts for color.
I loved every minute working on this cake. It made me think out of the box and problem solve and I probably spent about 2 weeks researching and planning the design of this cake.
As I stated before, I loved every minute of it.

Today, I am celebrating my children and their birthdays. Both are born on the same “date”, different months. (no, we did not plan it that way, it just happened) I’m so proud of both of my kids and the adults they have become. My son, who celebrates his birthday today, helps romance scam victims and has a soft spot in his heart for those who have been grossly taken advantage. He is a hero to many, my gentle giant.When my children were young, I tried to stay home as much as possible to be available for them as they needed me. When the started graduating highschool and then college, I was really able to refocus on my dreams. When they were young, I made a few of those Wilton Star Tip Cakes like Big Bird and Batman but as they have gotten older, when I am able, I try to make them a cool cake.

My daughter, who celebrated her birthday 1 month ago today, is my super hero. She is brave, she is fierce, she is a champion for children and has a sassy sense of humor. I have always admired her s***k. This week she submitted her final paper for her Master’s Degree in Music Education while working full time and maintaining a home and family including 2 furbabies. My daughter made a brave move and moved 3000 miles away and has been thriving ever since. (I’m so proud of her) When my children were young, I tried to stay home as much as possible to be available for them as they needed me. When the started graduating highschool and then college, I was really able to refocus on my dreams. When they were young, I made a few of those Wilton Star Tip Cakes like Big Bird and Batman but as they have gotten older, when I am able, I try to make them a cool cake. So here’s celebrating you, Sarah! We love you and miss you and can’t wait to see you and Brad! *This was a cake from a few years back. It was a labor of love. I don't know if you have noticed, but I try not to make the same cake twice.

I love working with old school buttercream techniques. It takes me back to my roots! This is an all butttercream design, all hand piped, with fondant hand molded cherries which have been panted with edible gold luster dust, and an edible print for the greeting on the cake. Fun times! This cake and cupcakes were just gorgeous, but the lime buttercream frosting in the cake was absolutely scrumptious. I would highly recommend it.
