Two weeks ago, Kiki, after four years, beginning as a dishwasher, then becoming a beast of a line-cook, and finally head baker, had her last day-shift with us. We were so sad to see her go that we created a evening baking shift just so we could keep her on the team 💕 A true one-of-a-kind, there is no one quite like her or anyone who could ever replace her 👑 It has been an honor to experience Kiki’s dedication to Dough Mama and commitment to her coworkers. Always ready to cover for someone, help in any way she could, or step into a completely new role at barely a day’s notice, Kiki was always game to support the team. Invariably the leader of the welcome wagon, she befriended everyone on their first day, immediately making them feel like part of the family with her warmth, and hilarious quick wit. If you had a shift with her, you knew it was going to be a blast because no matter what the vibe, be it unbearably slow or impossibly busy, she was makin’ jokes and keeping everyone laughing 😹🙌 We are so grateful that despite her busy schedule serving up gelato, getting jacked at the gym, and trying out adventurous recipes on the daily, she has stayed on as a part-timer 🥰 Without her banging out biscuits and leaving us insane cartoon messages twice a week, Dough Mama would be a lot less fun, and generally less palatable in every sense of the word. A talented baker, amazing artist, incredibly hard worker, a gentle and sensitive but wild and expansive spirit 🦄, to know you is to love you, , and we wish you all the luck and good fortune we know life has in store for you! 😘💪🤡

Tomorrow, January 30th, we will be CLOSED in solidarity with the national strike, the people of Minneapolis, and those who are being hunted and killed at the hands of the current administration. It has been utterly devastating witnessing the horrific acts of 🧊, and it will take sacrifice from all of us to stop them. We have to tell the administration that there is no amount of money worth a humans life, and they may not know it, but there are still American people who care more about their fellow human, no matter what country they’re from or color of their skin, than a payday, than power and success, than ANYTHING else. If this administration of bullies can only speak the language of money, we’ll speak their language with our dollars and tell them to ABOLISH ICE and change the trajectory of this country NOW 💪 We want to encourage participation in this strike, and realize that not everyone is in a financial situation where that is possible, if that’s the case, see our stories for other ways you can make a difference ❤️‍🔥

It is difficult in these relentlessly heartbreaking times to know what to say. There is so much chaos and devastation on the daily, it’s difficult to know where to focus your energy, and easy to feel like you’re screaming into the void or an echo chamber. But we must speak truth to power, because these monsters will not stop unless they’re forced to. They are the minority and they’re using terror tactics to trick us into believing that we don’t hold the power, but we do.

As hard as it is, we have to hold tight to the mantra “united we stand, divided we fall”. We must stick together, maintain our humanity, resist this administration by holding onto one another when they want to isolate us in our fear.

What makes us human is our capacity for love, our ability to change, and the lengths we’ll go to protect one another. Alex Pretti embodied that humanity in his last moments, and he will never be forgotten.

Trust your eyes, trust your community, and protect your heart. In the words of Octavia Butler, “the only way to prove to yourself that you have power is to use it.”

Resist. Resist. Resist.
