In addition to revealing the 2022 UPPY Awards finalists this morning, we also announced our first UPPY UPstanding Person of the Year - a person our UP editing and writing staff felt deserved special recognition for going way above and beyond — not only within the industry, but encompassing social and humanitarian realms as well. Manolo Betancur of Manolo's Bakery and ArtisenGelato has been a force in Charlotte for over 25 years. His strong voice in Charlotte's latin community has opened doors and broken long-entrenched barriers, creating a bridge spanning all cultures. This past year, he reached even further, devoting personal time and effort as well as donating proceeds from his businesses to give aid to the Ukrainian people devastated by the Russian invasion. For his hard work and his heart, we are honored to recognize Manolo as our inaugural UPstanding Person on the Year.
