In July of 2023, my 4 year old daughter, Evelyn, got to be in a music video for “What’s Up?” a collaborative song with Dolly and Linda Perry. They needed kids playing on the playground for the music video. It was an incredibly hot day.
As we finished up, covered in sweat we went to say goodbye to my husband who was working on set. My daughter lit up when she saw Dolly-instantly recognizing her from her Imagination Library books.

I held Evelyn in my arms as we watched Dolly perform. Dolly saw Evelyn and started waving to her. She then asked her her name (we were halfway across the room). Before I knew it, Dolly said “oh I can’t hear you sweetie” and she got up from set and started walking towards us.

I was stunned that she would stop everything just to say hello to us. When she got to me, I apologized for interrupting and I think I said something like “I don’t want to get you in trouble for stopping production”. She chuckled and said “oh it’s ok, they’ll wait for me” and then after talking to Evelyn a bit, she asked if we’d like a photo taken.

It was such a simple encounter, but for my family and I, it was very meaningful- and a memory my daughter will always treasure. She was such a kind individual who made you feel seen and valued. I wish I had better words to honor her with.

For now, here’s a photo of my favorite Dolly themed cookies I’ve made.

So I've finally completed the 150hour Chocolate Cake inspired by Alvin Zhou.

I chose to do a square cake instead of a round so that I would utilize ALL of the cake that was baked and have no scraps remaining. I also opted for mini chocolate chips on the side instead of standard sized in order to have less of a hard "bite" when eating it.

The amazing customer who ordered this insisted on paying me extra to make one for myself so that I could try it as well since it was on my bucket list. I am so touched and grateful for this consideration.

Overall, I loved the process of making this cake. It was not complicated, it just took time. I think you are meant to just find peace in the process of it. I may decorate a lot with fondant, but I am still a pastry chef. I enjoy making layered desserts, compotes, entremets, and simply baking for the joy of it. I even got to break out some of my rusty chocolate skills to garnish these cakes.

Now excuse me while I go eat some cake..

6 layers of chocolate cake with a chocolate milk soak, iced in a coffee infused chocolate mousse, covered in a rich chocolate ganache, and covered in semi sweet chocolate chips. I garnished them with whipped chocolate ganache, chocolate mousse, chocolate discs, and chocolate covered coffee beans.
