The bakery began with German-born Rudie Schaaf opening Gem City Pretzel on Warren Street in 1906, not long after he arrived in Dayton as a boy in 1885. dates to 1926 when his daughter, Emma, moved it there and renamed it. Smales' history twists into the city’s at every turn. A stand operated in the old downtown Arcade for years. Armloads of pretzels were ferried to neighborhood groceries and found

their way into the hands of generations of school kids. Currently owned and operated by Emma Smales, Schaaf's great-great granddaughter.

You ever walk into a place and think “this feels intentional”? That’s exactly what we were going for. ✨

When we designed the Pretzel Stand at the historic Dayton Arcade, we wanted to tell a story! From far away, it looks nice but when you look up close, there’s a whole pretzel universe hiding in plain sight.

We’re going to take you behind the scenes and share more about the design decisions, so stay tuned and get artsy about pretzels with us!

We asked you what flavored pretzels you’d like to see at the Arcade, and you Pretzel Babies came up with some delicious ideas! But, so many of you suggested Cinnamon Sugar with Vanilla Icing and we have exciting news for you . . . we already did that!

The Pretzel Stand at the Arcade has three flavors of Pretzel Babies available every day we’re open: Cinnamon Sugar with Vanilla Icing, Everything Bagel with Cream Cheese, and Traditional Salted with Beer Cheese! We’ve got our classic soft pretzels, too.

Pizza Pretzels are made with our traditional fluffy pretzel dough, high-quality mozzarella cheese, Italian seasonings, and a side of marinara sauce for dipping. Choose from plain cheese or mini pepperoni!
