The bakery began with German-born Rudie Schaaf opening Gem City Pretzel on Warren Street in 1906, not long after he arrived in Dayton as a boy in 1885. dates to 1926 when his daughter, Emma, moved it there and renamed it. Smales' history twists into the city’s at every turn. A stand operated in the old downtown Arcade for years. Armloads of pretzels were ferried to neighborhood groceries and found

their way into the hands of generations of school kids. Currently owned and operated by Emma Smales, Schaaf's great-great granddaughter.

Garlic Parmesan Pretzels are available a the Pretzel stand in the Arcade for the month of August! This tasty pretzel is made with our traditional fluffy pretzel dough, minced garlic, grated parmesan, and served with a side of marinara dipping sauce. Our baker Natalie makes this combo at home and we’re SO HAPPY she shared this tasty recipe with us so we can share it with all of you. It’s the perfect flavorful bite!

It’s Art in the City and the Pretzel Stand at the Arcade will be open extended hours 9AM - 5PM! Art in the City is Downtown Dayton’s annual celebration of the incredible collection of visual and performing arts experiences in our city!
