Locations in Davis and Winters, CA. Trudy and Mo Kalisky are native New Yorkers who came to Davis as graduate students in 1970. It didn't take long for the entrepreneurial couple to realize that there wasn't a decent loaf of bread to be had in their new rural West Coast hometown. Mo began baking French-style baguettes at home, bringing a scientific background to bear upon age-old traditions of bread-baking; and he continued to experiment with new formulas, processes and techniques. By the mid-1980s, the couple started delivering their artisan breads to Davis- and Sacramento-area restaurants and markets. Now in our 30th year, we still hand-mix, hand-cut and hand-form all our loaves. We create a wide variety of unique breads and a few outstanding sweet things, always using the freshest, all-natural ingredients. Our flours are milled in Yolo County from Sacramento Valley wheat, and we use other local ingredients and support local farmers whenever possible. Our sourdough starter is based on a pure strain of Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis sourced from the UC Davis Food Science and Technology department. Our birdseed loaf won a national award for best raisin bread. And if you like cheesecake, our recipe is straight from the Claremont Diner in Montclair, New Jersey — the same cheesecake on the menu today at New York's famous Carnegie Deli. Today, The Upper Crust Baking Co. remains one of Northern California’s premier artisanal bakeries, as well as one of its oldest. You can find our products (and sometimes Trudy and Mo) at farmers markets throughout Northern California.

40 years, three generations, and a whole lot of memories. ❤️

It all started back in 1986 with Mo and Trudy, who built Upper Crust Baking into something that would become a special part of the Davis community. What began as their dream has grown into a family legacy, with their son Lorin carrying on the tradition and helping Upper Crust Baking become what it is today.

Looking back at these old photos reminds us just how much has changed over the last four decades, but also how much has stayed the same. The love of baking, the importance of family, and the community that’s supported us every step of the way.

And tomorrow, we get to celebrate all of it with you! 🎉

Since 1986, Upper Crust Baking has been a part of countless morning routines, family traditions, celebrations, and probably more than a few pastry addictions. And we couldn’t have made it this far without all of you!

It’s a big week for us here at Upper Crust as we prepare to host our 40 Year Anniversary on Saturday.

While Bistro Night will take a break this Friday, Pizza Night is in full swing! Which means it’s time to start cooking up dinner plans for Wednesday!

For those of you looking for a seasonal pizza, we recommend giving the Sa-Squash a try! Formerly known as the Red Kurri, this pizza has a pesto base, red kurri squash, fontina, bacon, fresh basil, and a drizzle of honey.

We’ve also got a variety of specialty pizzas, our Big Garden Salad, and much more!

Orders can be placed online (link in bio), in-person, or by phone! We’ve got time slots for both dine-in and take-out between 5-7pm!

Crisp around the edges, soft and chewy in the center, and baked right here at Upper Crust Baking, they’re an easy addition to a coffee run, an afternoon treat, or a box to bring home and share.

Of course, we fully support the decision not to share. 😂

Our newest Bistro Night menu spans the summer and fall seasons to provide you all with fresh and colorful dishes! Guests will discover a variety of dishes spanning the Mediterranean, each with their unique ingredients and histories!

We invite you all to join us this Friday from 5-9pm on the Patio at Upper Crust Baking. We do not take reservations.

Remember that everyone is invited to our 40 Year Anniversary celebration which will take place on Saturday, October 17, from 4:30-8pm. As a result we will be taking Friday, 10/16 off, in order to prepare. Then Bistro Night will return on the 23rd!

If you only know us for bread and pastries, you missed a whole other side of Upper Crust Baking this summer. 🍷

Bistro Night gave our team a chance to trade the pastry case for Friday night dinners and get creative with a completely different kind of menu.

La Dolce Vita brought crispy polenta, seasonal dishes, charcuterie, desserts, cocktails, w**e, and plenty of evenings spent slowing down at the bakery. These are a few of our favorite moments from the summer. 🤍

But La Dolce Vita was only one chapter of Bistro Night.

A completely new menu is coming next. Stay tuned because we’ll be revealing what Friday nights at Upper Crust Baking look like this fall very soon. 👀
