👀 Things could be changing if this happens! Fingers crossed folks!

A victory for small business! An important bill I wrote with home-based food companies, Senate Bill 541 is now enrolled and on its way to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

I have worked with members of the cottage food industry since my days in the House, passing the first cottage food bill back in 2011. Today SB 541 expands the types of products that a small food operation can sell, eases labeling requirements, and raises the cap on annual gross income to $150,000 and adjusts to the CPI.

The cottage food industry is booming, allowing individuals to build businesses out of their home kitchens. Many of these home businesses eventually grow into large companies, including one that began with a family purchasing excess cream from local dairy farmers that they sold as butter in the Brenham area. You may be more familiar with its modern name, Blue Bell Creameries.
