Great Exbaketations Bakery’s next event will be the Pinkster celebration, and I’m very excited to be participating for the very first time!
Pinkster is the Dutch name for the celebration of the Pentecost. In 18th century Albany, as well as in other places formerly in the colony, New Netherland, Pinkster became an important event for both enslaved and free Black people. Nearby Capitol Hill was once known as Pinkster Hill because of the large Pinkster celebration held there in the 18th century. Pinkster was an opportunity for enslaved people and free Black people to come together with family and friends to celebrate community and African heritage, such as stories, music, dance, and food culture. For many, this weeklong celebration might be the only time they could reunite this way.
Join us next Saturday, May 23rd from 11-4 . I’ll be posting my menu soon!
