Many of you may know the cakes.
You may know the flavours, the buttercream, the flowers and the little details that go into each order.
But you may not know the person behind them.
Today I want to introduce myself -
My name is Caitlin and I live in two worlds:
One of science and one of sugar.
I am a baker and a physicist.
I was always interested in baking from a young age. My mom would buy me the ready-made cookie dough that Spar used to sell, and I would happily spend time in the kitchen making something of my own.
When I was 16, my grandmother bought me my first Kenwood stand mixer so that I could bake for Entrepreneurs' Day at school.
She saw something in me that I couldn’t yet see in myself.
At 17, I started baking cakes on request.
At 19, I began selling my baked goods professionally.
For a long time, I thought I would eventually go to culinary school. But in an interesting plot twist, I decide to go into the world of STEM.
I completed my BSc in Mathematics and Physics, followed by my Honours in Physics with distinction. I am now completing my Master's in Physics, specialising in photonics - the science of light and its interaction with matter. My research has applications in fibre-optic technology and optical communication.
Everything I know about baking has been built through persistence, experimentation, and an almost obsessive desire to improve.
And the funny thing is, the two worlds have more in common than you might think.
Physics taught me precision.
Research taught me patience.
Baking taught me creativity.
And both taught me that beautiful results rarely happen without a ridiculous amount of work behind the scenes.
This year, I was incredibly honoured to receive the best Master's poster award in the Photonics track at the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP) Conference.
My ouma - the person who believed most in me - passed away unexpectedly two months ago.
She was my biggest supporter, and every cake I have made since has felt a little different.
CG Cakes has never been about quantity.
It has always been about quality - in the ingredients, in the design, in the details, and in the experience you receive.
When you trust me with something important to you, I don't take that lightly.
I care about the little things.
I care about getting it right.
And I care about creating something worthy of the occasion you are celebrating.
To every person who has ordered from me, recommended me, shared my work, supported my business or simply followed along - thank you.
You have allowed me to keep building this strange, wonderful life between two worlds.
I miss you ouma.
I hope I continue to make you proud.
