Fruit flies are the bane of my sourdough existence. 😂🪰

They aren’t necessarily a sign of a dirty kitchen, they’re attracted to the ye**ty, fermented smell of sourdough starter. During warm weather, even a tiny amount of starter or dough residue in a drain, garbage can, sponge, or recycling bin can keep them coming back.

My fruit-fly battle plan:

🪰 Clean starter jars and utensils immediately
🪰 Wipe up every tiny splash of starter
🪰 Empty garbage and recycling frequently
🪰 Scrub and flush sink drains
🪰 Keep starter covered while still allowing room for gas to escape

Apparently, I don’t just feed Frodough. I feed his entire fan club. 🤦‍♀️😂

POV: I said I was just baking a few loaves this morning. 😂🍞

Today’s lineup was a little bit classic, a little bit bold, and a little bit what happens when Jenny starts experimenting…

🍞 Original
🧀 Cheddar Jalapeño
🫐 Blueberry
🌾 Rye
🧅 French Onion
💜💚 Pandan-Ube Swirl

All naturally fermented. All baked fresh. All from my little cottage microbakery in Warrenville.

And yes… my kitchen smelled AMAZING. 🤎

Which loaf are you grabbing first?

Please tell me I’m not the only baker who didn’t know this. 😂🍋

Do you know how many lemons I have zested by hand for Blueberry Lemon Sourdough?! DO YOU KNOW?! 😭

And apparently this whole time I could just… BUY LEMON ZEST.

The things you learn when you own a microbakery. 😂

I’m choosing to look at this as a brilliant discovery and NOT think about all the hours of my life I’ve already spent zesting lemons.

Please make me feel better , what ridiculously simple kitchen/baking shortcut did you discover way later than you should have? 😂👇

How long does it take to sell 325 sourdough items? Apparently, just 3½ hours! 🤯🍞

Today was about so much more than watching the bins slowly empty. One of our wonderful regulars found the Golden Ticket in his bag, our youngest customer Haven stopped by with her family, and by 11:30 a.m., every last item was gone!

325 items. Completely sold out. 🥹

Thank you to everyone who came out, waited in line, checked their bags, shared a smile, and supported our little microbakery. Seeing familiar faces and watching Haven grow up at our booth makes these busy market mornings incredibly special.

Wheaton, you showed up BIG today. We are tired, grateful, and completely blown away. 💛🍞

And remember…always check your bag. You never know when a Golden Ticket might be hiding inside! 🎟️✨

Sourdough discard doesn’t have to mean waste. 🍞✨

And here’s the other little secret… you don’t actually have to HAVE a ton of discard.

With a little planning, you can keep a smaller starter, feed what you need, and avoid ending up with a giant jar of discard taking over your refrigerator. 😂

But when you do have some? Ohhhh, the possibilities.

🥞 Pancakes & waffles
🍪 Cookies
🧁 Muffins
🍕 Pizza crust
🫓 Tortillas & flatbreads
🥧 Pie crust
🍫 Brownies
🧇 Crackers
…and SO much more.

I just published a new blog all about sourdough discard — how to create less of it AND how to turn what you do have into something delicious.

And this one turned out especially fun because there are lots of pictures and ideas to get you baking. ❤️

What’s YOUR favorite thing to make with sourdough discard? 👇

If you’ve entered the world of sourdough, chances are you’ve encountered discard. You feed your starter, remove some of it, add fresh flour and water...and then stare at that perfectly good little pile of starter wondering:Am I really supposed to throw this away?!Good news: you don’t have to.Bu...
