September is one of our favorite months of the year because it’s time for Sea Otter Awareness Week — September 20–26, 2026! 💙

Sea Otter Awareness Week is an annual celebration dedicated to raising awareness about sea otters, their important role in nearshore ecosystems, and the challenges they face. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn more about these incredible animals and the people working to protect them.

The 2026 theme is “Rooted in Resilience.” 🌿🦦

Sea Otter Bakehouse will be taking a two-week production break at the end of September and beginning of October.

Orders will still be accepted during this period, but please note that all orders placed between September 26 and October 16 will ship on October 19-20.

✨ Exciting news! ✨

Starting this week, you can now find Sea Otter Bakehouse cookies at Monterey Bay Kayaks in both Monterey and Moss Landing! 🦦🍪

Monterey Bay Kayaks is much more than a kayak rental company. They offer unforgettable guided kayaking and paddleboarding adventures through one of the world’s most incredible marine ecosystems, where you may encounter southern sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, and countless seabirds in their natural habitat.

What I especially admire is their commitment to respectful wildlife viewing and educating visitors about the importance of protecting Monterey Bay’s unique marine ecosystem. Their values beautifully align with the mission of Sea Otter Bakehouse, and I am deeply grateful that they chose to share our cookies—and our story—with their guests.

On May 31st, I had the privilege of celebrating the 10th anniversary of in Santa Cruz.

I first met Gena, Sea Otter Savvy’s director, in 2014, when the organization was still in its early stages. Over the years, I have been honored to support their work in my own small way.

In January 2023, Gena asked me to bake cookies as gifts for Sea Otter Savvy volunteers. At the time, I wasn’t running a business—I was simply someone who loved baking and often made sea otter-themed treats for fun. Gena knew this, which is why she reached out to me.

To thank the volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to protecting sea otters, I created a cookie tin can inspired by the kelp forest ecosystem, featuring sea otter, sea urchin, and kelp cookies.

That cookie box eventually became the prototype for what is now our Kelp Forest Cookie Box and Kelp Forest Bundle.

On the drive home after delivering those cookies, I had a realization: This is what I want to do.

I love baking. I love seeing people enjoy something I made with my own hands. And if a portion of those sales can help support sea otter conservation, even better. If sea otters can bring people together and create something positive for everyone involved, then everybody wins.

In many ways, Sea Otter Bakehouse exists because of Sea Otter Savvy.

Their work, their passion, and their friendship inspired me to turn an idea into reality. What started as a gift for volunteers became a small business with a mission.

Congratulations on 10 incredible years, Sea Otter Savvy, and thank you for inspiring so many people—including me.

We’ve made a small but meaningful update to our packaging 🌿

Our kraft bags are now slightly smaller and no longer have a window. While you won’t be able to peek at the little otters inside anymore, this change helps protect the cookies even better—by blocking light and improving moisture and oxygen resistance to keep them fresh longer.

Both our previous and new bags are compostable, but we’ve taken an extra step by switching to materials that are certified for industrial composting (ASTM D6400, EN13432). This ensures a higher level of trust and transparency in our environmental commitment.
*The labels on the bags area also ASTM D6400 and EN13432 certified.

At Sea Otter Bakehouse, we donate a portion of our proceeds to sea otter conservation. At the same time, we are continuously working to reduce our environmental impact by choosing more sustainable packaging and ingredients—because we believe every small step matters in creating a better future.
