Twenty three years ago, I iced my first cake. It was terrible. The icing was sloppy, there were crumbs in it, and the flowers all drooped and sagged. I was literally put in the corner to practice the basics on repeat. I never thought it would be a thing, just another stop on life’s path.

I find myself, today, very nostalgic. It’s been a ride. I’ve learned a lot on that ride, how to do some things, and how not to do other things. I’ve made some stops over the years that have really shaped me, for instance, my time with Ed at Cupcake Island, was key to me finding the right path. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the lessons I learned there were so important.

Along the way, Kristel and I got together. We started dating at a time I didn’t know if I was going to stay with cakes. She’s proved to be the strongest support, and biggest cheerleader I could have ever asked for. My career would have looked very different without her.

I’m going to take the day to be grateful, mindful, and just a little bit joyful. If you get a chance, check out the ‘Faces’ issue of Omaha Magazine this month.
