Fennel & Figs

Fennel & Figs Thank you for 4 1/2 wonderful years. The bakery is now closed.

Permanently closed.

Follow me on my journey to the Pacific Northwest where Fennel & Figs will relaunch as SpiceWorks in summer of 2026.

And so it begins. Step one: required food worker card received. LOTS more paperwork to complete, but the process to open my business in Washington has begun. Can granola be far behind?

Getting settled and learning my way around the peninsula. The weekly farmers market is right down the hill from my house. This week’s haul: gorgeous flowers (there are two flower farmers at the market, so I’ll have flowers in the house all summer), a sourdough loaf, yummy orange and currant scone, bok choy and asparagus, and cider from Finn River Cidery over in Chimacum. Planning a visit to their cidery soon! I’m getting a little itchy to bake, so stay tuned!

The day started out misty and rainy but then the skies cleared and the sun came out. Driving along the gorgeous Oregon coast with a death grip on my steering wheel through all the twists and turns of Highway 101. Made a stop at Tillamook Creamery to see their cheese making operation and enjoy some ice cream.

Awestruck and feeling very small, driving through the Avenue of Giants. (See the person at the tree in the first photo for scale.) So beautiful and majestic.

Warning: massive photo dump. OH. MY. GOD. Desert Botanical Garden is AMAZING! I was shouting in my car before I even got to the parking lot; it was so beautiful. I wandered everywhere, despite the 98 degree temps (it’s a dry heat, right?) and took hundreds of photos. Definitely the best day of the trip so far. If you’re in Phoenix/Scottsdale, I urge you to spend a day here. Finish with a refreshing cocktail and salad in their restaurant. You won’t regret it.

The tiny town of Marfa (population @1,600) is a gem in the middle of nowhere. The landscape of west Texas is beautiful, wild, and wide open. My lodging for the night was the funky Antelope Lodge in Alpine, just east of Marfa. Most everything art-related was closed on Tuesday - poor planning on my part - but I loved strolling through Marfa, looking at architecture and finding a cool coffee shop with the best coffee, and seeing a few of the iconic tourist photo ops.

After white knuckling it through Houston, I visited the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, my first time there. While there isn’t much in bloom yet, aside from the bluebonnets, it was still such a pleasure to roam the gardens! The children’s section was a delight; the waterfall there was the coolest spot in the garden - it was HOT!

New Orleans, Part 2 and driving across Louisiana: Levee Baking Co. is my favorite bakery in NOLA. It was a lovely morning to wander through the Garden District from my hotel to Magazine Street. Somehow, I timed my arrival at Levee Baking perfectly - right before every parent with a small child showed up for their morning pastry 😂😂😂😂😂 The Kouign Amann was flaky and delicious.

On my drive across Louisiana I stopped at the Acadian Village in Lafayette. For my Montgomery friends: it’s like Old Alabama Town but Cajun. I like that all of their ticket and gift shop sales support a nonprofit organization for adults with special needs.
