Happy birthday to the ALA! Read a banned book!

This year’s Banned Books Week coincides with ALA’s official 150th anniversary. To mark the occasion, ALA has released a list of the 150 most challenged books documented from 1990, when ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom began tracking book challenges, through 2025.

The full list of the 150 most challenged books - those that have been targeted for restriction or removal in libraries and schools - spans contemporary titles such as "Gender Q***r: A Memoir" by Maia Kobabe and literary classics such as "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee and "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck.

“Every book on this list is a reminder that readers have the right to explore ideas and decide for themselves what to read,” said ALA President Maria McCauley. “For 150 years, ALA has worked alongside library workers to keep that choice open to everyone. We ask for support for our libraries so the next generation has that same freedom.”

What a lovely week in Victoria and Salt Spring Island! The Butchart Gardens, Fisherman’s Wharf, a culinary walking tour, ferries, art galleries on Salt Spring Island, a wonderful Airbnb on the island, lots of seafood, lots of relaxing. I can’t wait to go back.

Day Tripping: Sequim, Olympic Peninsula

What began as an overcast morning cleared to a beautiful day, perfect for a drive over to Sequim and a visit to some of the town’s lavender farms. With around 25 lavender farms, Sequim has to be the best-smelling town in Washington 😂😂😂😂

And so it begins. Step one: required food worker card received. LOTS more paperwork to complete, but the process to open my business in Washington has begun. Can granola be far behind?

Getting settled and learning my way around the peninsula. The weekly farmers market is right down the hill from my house. This week’s haul: gorgeous flowers (there are two flower farmers at the market, so I’ll have flowers in the house all summer), a sourdough loaf, yummy orange and currant scone, bok choy and asparagus, and c***r from Finn River Cidery over in Chimacum. Planning a visit to their c***ry soon! I’m getting a little itchy to bake, so stay tuned!
