CARVE WARS IS COMING TO MINOT!!
THE BAD NEWS: We are going to be losing a lot of mature trees and tree cover in the Moose Park area because of the future Maple Diversion Flood Protection Project. It sucks.
THE GOOD NEWS: We are partnering with Carve Wars to transform those relics into 5 large-scale sculptures that will be installed in our community public spaces for years to come!
WHAT IS CARVE WARS? Carve Wars is a collection of professional chainsaw artists who travel across North America creating larger-than-life carvings and works of art. This festival will feature 5 artists who will work for 5 days to create 5 unique, legacy works for the Minot community to enjoy and celebrate. In addition to the public works, the artists will also be bringing and creating A LOT of smaller works that will be available for the public to purchase via an auction on Saturday, October 10.
WHERE IS IT HAPPENING? The artists will be working exclusively at the greenspace located on the north end of the Moose Lodge Parking Lot (400 9th St. SW). The Moose Lodge has graciously allowed the public to use their parking lot.
WHEN IS IT HAPPENING? Carve Wars will start on Tuesday, October 6 and run through the end of the day on Saturday, October 10. Artists will be working on their master carvings throughout the timeframe, but they will also take some time on October 8 and 9 to provide two Quick Carve demonstrations to the public. Then, on October 10, the public will vote on the legacy carvings to determine the winner (hence the War part of Carve Wars) and they can also purchase carvings via a public auction.
IS IT FREE? Yes, every part of this event is free and open to the public! This is made possible by a partnership with the Minot Area Council of the Arts, The Aggie Foundation, and a few other local partnership. If you want to buy one of the smaller chainsaw-carved sculptures, come to the auction and be ready to bid on and pay for this unique work of art for your home.
CAN I BRING FRIENDS? Um, yes.
WHERE WILL THE LEGACY CARVINGS GO? There are lots of possibilities, but we are working closely with folks at the Mouse River Flood Protection Project and the Minot Parks District to permanently install the 5 legacy sculptures along public walking and biking trails.
CAN I BRING A CHAINSAW AND JOIN IN? No Gregg, no you cannot. Leave the chainsawing to the professionals (and their insurance policy...)
