I had a lovely cake order for a young woman graduating high school who loves Victorian literature. I've never met her, but every cake for her has been awesome so I'm so glad I got to make her graduation cake too! I went for a Jane Austin vibe.

It was so hot out! If you saw me last week, that means you had the chance to behold my lame but wonderful sun-shirt. It's my official outfit of summer. I have a lot of messages for young women, but one of the top ones is to protect your skin! This sun-shirt is my best friend, and if I can rock it, you can too. (Also wear a hat, don't text while driving, and don't smoke!)

Jeff and I have had fun working on the garden. We are doing an experiment with eco-friendly grass. I'm pretty sure it will grow, but the question will be if it can survive the winter. I'll report back in spring 2027.

I spent our rainy saturday working on my flying fox (the Australian bat) embroidery. They look so cute and fuzzy! I'm going to put them in a fall tree because this hoop will be displayed in the autumn. Flying foxes were one of our favorite animals when we lived in Australia because they look like cats hanging from the trees.

On the hottest days I always need to close all the curtains in the house to keep it cool in here. It makes me so sad to hang out in the dark, so I brought up a little TV to watch the movie Ever After (1998) with Drew Barrymore. I highly recommend this movie! It's one of my favorites, and it has aged really well. It is excellent for spring!

One of the best parts about Felicity being a teenager is that I don't need to pretend not to like TV anymore. I love TV!!! The secret is out!!! Now I can watch it in the kitchen sometimes, such a treat!

I hope you'll be enjoying these cooler days coming up. I'll be doing lots of baking, because I haaaate turning on the oven when it's over 90 degrees outside. Lots of cakes and macarons to bake now that it's back in the 70s.

This sea turtle is SO CUTE!!! I hope real sea turtles are invited to this ocean themed birthday party.

Painting cakes like this is almost like crossing a tightrope for me. I sort of know what I want it to look like, but once I begin I need to cross that tight rope without looking down. Just painting, no thinking.

If I start to think, I'll fall!

Once I think I might be done with the trickiest part, I take a step back to asses, and then I design the rest of the cake around what I've created. So for this cake I knew I needed a sea turtle. I started painting this cute little guy in a trance, then stepped back and picked the colors for a sunset sky.

Thanks for trusting me to create beautiful cakes for you! I never know how they will look until they are done, but that's half the fun!

I loved watching the world bloom outside my window this week while making a ton of floral cakes and macarons for your graduation parties! A set of pink transformer macarons snuck in there early this week for a fun change of pace.

I love working from home because the time between seeing a beautiful bird and calling to Jeff to come look at it with me is about 7 seconds. Coffee tastes better if you drink it with your husband while looking at a mango colored bird. Did you get any orioles this week? One of our family friends put out orange halves for them and his garden filled up with orioles, so I'm definitely going to do that next year.

Jeff and I are not skilled gardeners, but we spend each year doing little experiments to see what grows and what we use. Thinking of it as experients makes it so you don't feel bad when a plant dies, it's just data. Basil never makes it, so we didn't even bother with that this year. We accidentally bought waaaay to many tomato plants. Between Berry Acres and Lowes we were able to find all of the herbs we need for our fancy cooking. Sage is an absolute must for me!

I treated myself to flowers from Lexi Lou Floral on 4th avenue, so now it's blooming inside AND outside.

Please don't judge our ramshackle deck. It has lasted since 1985 and the wind has not been kind to it (Same, girl, same!). Someday in the distant future we will replace it, but until then it is becoming our own gothic ruins. I choose to believe it's whimsical like my wild grey hairs. As the deck and I age, we just become more eccentric.

We took advantage of the final cold days early in the week to make roast chicken, French onion soup, chicken stock, and chicken pot pie. 40 degrees isn't so bad when you have homemade pot pie!!

I hope you enjoyed our one day of spring on Saturday, because apparently it's summer now!

Landscape cakes are such a joy to create! I get to relax and create a dreamworld as the buttercream does what it wants. This landscape cake turned out especially magical because it looks like you could walk right into the meadow.

Today is Felicity's last day of middle school, so I hope I can talk her into walking in some meadows with me this summer! She hates to go on walks with us, but maybe wildflowers will entice her.

Whenever I see Clay & Fern Co.'s earrings or floral wall plaques, I always think they look like my cakes. Now one of them is a cake!

The floral cake has chocolate layers with Nutella Swiss meringue buttercream filling. The outside is decorated with palette knife flowers inspired by her artwork.

The combo of a bespoke wall hanging and painted cake might be the most romantic gift of all time. For example, can you imagine receiving this set based on your wedding bouquet or favorite flowers?

I found the perfect place to hang the plaque near where I keep my Sundbakes apron. It looks like it came straight out of a Nancy Meyers movie!

I've always been big into romanticizing my life, which is actually how Sundbakes started. But men can romanticize too! Check out Jeff with his shrimp cocktail in a martini glass that he made as a "little snack." This is the good life, folks!

Lots of wonderful graduation and birthday cake & macaron orders this week. Thank you for supporting my business, it means so much. It allows us to pay our mortgage and keep buying Jeff shrimp snacks.

For Mother's Day Jeff and I went to Atypical because moms got a free pint. Their big tables are perfect for pulling out some of our more complicated board games. During that time Felicity baked a brownie/cookie concoction that was excellent. A free beer and brownie is basically the way to my heart.

We've been watching Studio Ghibli movies for the first time. They are AMAZING! You probably already know that, and I don't know what took me so long to figure this out. There's a character in Howl's Moving Castle that looks and acts exactly like our dog Foggy. My guess is the artist had a dog that was just like him.

We pulled out our compost for the year. If you don't compost, I highly recommend it. You get to turn your trash into dirt, and it feels like an elementary school science project. Good for the earth, good for fun!

One of the funniest things this week was a conversation I had with a middle schooler who I drive home from school. On the way home Berit was singing all of the lyrics to One Week, which starts "Bert Kaempfert's got the mad hits." I'd never put thought into that lyric before, but as she sang it I realized I own a Bert Kaempfert album! How often do you get to have a conversation with a music prodigy in your back seat about Bert Kaempfert, the 1960s composer? I feel so lucky to have gotten to know her so well during school pick ups over the last three years. Teaming up with her family for carpooling has made life both easier and more joyful for all of us.

What do all of these stories have in common? Nothing, except that our community is amazing.

After our amazing weather yesterday, I'm so ready for spring! I finished my annual re-read of Anne of Green Gables, so there's nothing stopping us now.

When Hint of Whimsy Photography and I were setting up this photo shoot last year, I knew I wanted to go for an Anne of Green Gables feeling (with my own Gilbert Blythe!!!). They captured that feeling so perfectly!

I've had the pleasure of painting a few Anne of Green Gables macaron sets, and I can't wait to make more. Books and movies are the perfect inspiration macarons.

I hope you bring a little bit of Anne to your spring this year.💐

A gorgeous floral cake is the perfect gift for your mom, sister, daughter, or friend. It's also the perfect gift for yourself!

I wish you could see the texture on this cake in person. I use a palette knife to build the flowers layer by layer, and always design on the fly.

It's like buttercream Bob Ross! A happy flower here, happy flower there.

A hectic week, fully booked with cake and macaron orders, but never too busy for homemade pasta!

I've been making pasta for over 15 years. I bought my first pasta maker and a beautiful Italian cookbook for myself on my 25th birthday. If you scroll to the end of this post, you'll see a picture of 25 year-old-me teaching myself to make pasta for the first time. I was practically a baby!

I hope you get to try freshly made pasta in your life, it is truly one of the greatest foods of all time.

Real thought I had while making pasta this week: "Wait...am I the Stanley Tucci of Minot?" Quickly followed by "No...I would need to wear structured clothes for that. Never mind."

While Jeff was making ragu sauce and I was kneading the dough, we listened to a Bob Newhart comedy album from 1960 that Jeff got for one dollar. It was wonderful! I can't believe how topical it was. One of the sets was about discount airlines which could have been written today. 66 years and flying still sucks in the exact same way! We couldn't stop laughing, it was timeless.

I finished my embroidery of our dog Foggy by placing him in some grass and wildflowers. He looks so real!

I'm fully booked for the next few weeks, but be sure to get your summer orders in. I can't wait to make tasty cakes and macarons for you.

I may not be the Stanley Tucci of Minot, but maybe I could be the Julia Child of 27th St. NW.
