Autumn doesn't last forever, and neither does cake. But both sure do make life lovely!

The vast majority of my time this week was spent looking at trees. Luckily, my kitchen window means I can stare at fall foliage AND paint cakes at the same time!

My favorite is a tiny chestnut tree that has been growing for 7 years in our backyard. We planted chestnuts from Jeff's grandma's tree in Bottineau. Most of the chestnuts we buried got eaten by squirrels, but one persevered and is turning into the strongest tree! I hope Felicity can take a chestnut from it to grow her own tree at her own house someday.

Lots of lovely cakes this week, including a purple abstract tiered cake and an announcement cake for a San Diego adventure. A little girl is getting to go to San Diego to see the zoo, sea lions, and go fishing on a fancy boat.

Macarons are an amazing way to share fun news!

Jeff and I spent a lot of time outside crafting. Jeff's working on a dice rolling tray for my brother because he's our Dungeon Master for tabletop role playing games. In our current campaign, I'm playing as a clairvoyant tarot-reading vampire solving mysteries in St. Paul. It's great!

I'm working on a new embroidery project that I'm calling "Medieval Maximilism." It's starting out with a gauntlet clad warrior woman, and will probably have a unicorn and a bunch of other crazy stuff. I'm taking a more-is-more approach.

My dad sent us matching alpaca sweaters, so winter can't scare us now! If you think Jeff and I were cute crafting in the summer, just wait until we do it wearing matching sweaters in the winter.

Choose your fighter! I mean...macaron!

If you spent most of the 90s playing video games like my siblings and I did, this cake is for you.

It was hard to choose the heavy hitters for this cake! I think I'm most nostalgic for Megaman 2 and Duck Hunt.

Please order a cake dedicated entirely to Mega Man 2 or Duck Hunt!

And Super Mario Brothers 2.

The macaron cake I painted with an "It's A Wonderful Life" theme could not be more perfect for this week. We've had the most gorgeous fall weather!

We took a trip to the pumpkin patch and took our annual "Elizabeth holds Felicity" photo. I started recreating this photo in 2013 when Felicity was just two. We've taken an identical photo every year since. I plan to lift her until I am 70, at which point she can lift me instead if she insists.

If you are looking for the perfect October show, I recommend turning on The Munsters (1964). I watched it on cable as a kid, and it's somehow even funnier now than it was then! I watched it while making dinner, 10/10.

I had another week of gorgeous cakes and macarons for the Minot community. I love that the anniversary couple didn't skip out on "It's A Wonderful Life" just because it's usually associated with Christmas. What a beautiful celebration of love! I also made floral cakes and retirement macarons, plus a bunch of other milestones. Treats for every stage!

Finally, I had a magical moment at Main Street Books because it turns out a third book in my favorite series was published and I had no idea!! This is what life used to feel like all the time pre-internet. Stumbling across the perfect book was the most nostalgic and magical feeling.

I hope your favorite author has published a new book under the radar, and that you find it at your local indie shop waiting for you.

Now is the perfect time to think about November, December and January so you can plan a whimsical surprise cake for someone you love.

Painting floral cakes is like a buttercream meditation for me. Each cake takes on its own beautiful personality. This one was a stunner!!

This cake is for a wedding with a Cinderella theme, so the bride's flowers were shades of white and blue.

When in doubt, go with a floral cake. They are even more lovely in person!

I don't think I'll ever get over these hand-painted seashell macarons!

Seashells are due for a comeback. There were everywhere in the late 80s and early 90s.

Come back seashells, we miss you!

Pets on cakes, autumn Gilmore Girls embroidery, and cozy fall weather. A pretty good deal if you ask me!

Lots of cute pets on cakes this week. The first was for an anniversary celebrating their wedding on the beach and their cute golden retriever. The second was a little girl's birthday cake celebrating her cats, favorite colors, and flowers. These pets are so loved!

I finished Stars Hollow! It was so relaxing to add little fall elements wherever I wanted. I love the freedom of embroidering without a pattern, so little towns and nature scenes are a perfect fit for me.

For my next project I'm planning to do a medieval or renaissance inspired piece. Maybe with a unicorn! We'll see. Learning to embroider this year has been such a joy.

Be sure to plan ahead for November, December, and January birthdays! Those poor folks often get forgotten. If you have a birthday in those months, take matters into your own hands. Don't leave it up to fate!

If I ask you to send me your invitation, it's not because I'm going to show up to your party!

It's because I can sometimes pull inspiration directly from the invitation, like the font on this couple's name.

(I don't color match though. It's too stressful! I'll aim for the general color family like "warm neutrals" or "blues" but not much beyond that. Almost all of my cakes are in the pastel range because that's what feels most beautiful and delicious to me.)

Invitations tend to sum up the vibe of the whole wedding, baby shower, bridal shower, or birthday party. So if you've created an invitation, you are half-way to getting your cake and macarons already!
