Glad Midsommar from Minot! I hope you are setting something huge on fire with your community this weekend like I did! I love that they don't just set it on fire, they set it on FIRE.

Seeing a (safe) raging fire like this on a night when the sun sets past 10:00 pm is so cathartic, you can feel it in your bones. It's a very cool way to set a fresh start to the second half of the year.

Scandinavian Heritage Park also had a family of visiting Norwegian forest kittens, the only thing more entertaining than a bonfire. These cats have the chillest personalities and get massive when fully grown. When I retire from Sundbakes someday, the first thing I'm going to do is get a fluffy cat just like these. I can't have any shedding pets right now, but someday my house will be filled with them! I think they put the cage around the cats not to keep them in, but to keep us from grabbing them in a trance and running away.

This has been a busy week for macaron cakes. Macaron cakes get extra popular in the summer time because they are so perfect for little mid-week celebrations between trips to the lake. They are so cute and delicious!

By happenstance, my newest album is from a Swedish duo that I love. If you've been enjoying Noah Kahan lately, check out First Aid Kit. They've got an indi-folk sound that fits perfectly on playlists with Stick Season.

Time moves too quickly! This has already been one of the funnest summers of my life, and it's only just beginning. We are trying really hard to save money right now, so we are opting for free events and activities whenever possible. Minot is full of them, we are so fortunate.

I'm excited for all of your fun orders coming up! July and August are filling fast, but I still have good availability for September. Be careful though, those dates tend to fill quickly once we are on the other end of the 4th of July. Magically, on July 5th everyone will realize they need a September cake at the same moment. Be sure you are one of the first!

With heart,
Elizabeth

This unique birthday cake is based on the book series Tuesdays in the Castle. I was excited to receive this request because Felicity loved this book in elementary school. The hero is a little girl who lives in a castle that changes shape on Tuesdays.

I worked on the sides of this peanut butter cup cake for a long time adding random towers and doorways, along with the birthday girl's favorite griffin.

I left the top blank until the very end because I couldn't decide if I should decorate that part or leave it empty (sometimes empty looks best when the sides are super busy).

But then it dawned on me: BIRTHdays at the castle!!!! Like Tuesdays at the castle. I think a light bulb must have actually appeared over my head when I had that idea!

I love decorating cakes in the moment with zero plan, it helps me escape perfectionism and have fun creating something wild.

If you want a cake that looks like a picture you saw online, I'm not your gal. But if you want a cake designed from my imagination, I can't wait to make you one!

I love knowing my clients because when they request Americana BBQ macarons, I can include one of their adorable puppy!

There aren't enough fun surprises in adult life, so if I can make a moment of pure whimsy for you, I'm definitely going to do it.🐕

Shakespeare macaron cakes, mountain goats, and peonies. This was pretty much the perfect week for me!

I had a macaron cake order for a recipient that I happen to know personally, so I was able to make it extra niche to surprise. her We knew each other from working at Minot State, and I saw a facebook post last week that The Tempest was her most watched Shakespeare play. I designed what is surely the only Tempest macaron cake in existence!

We took a road trip to the Black Hills to meet up with my parents. I grew up in the Black Hills, but I never had the chance to do most touristy things. Felicity was interested in going to one of the "gravity defying" mystery houses. I'd never been to one before, and we had SO MUCH FUN! You know intellectually that it's just a whacky house built on an extremely slanted mountain, but the illusion is strong enough to suspend your disbelief. I almost got motion sick in there!

Jeff and I went on lots of hikes, including one to the top of a mountain in Spearfish Canyon and a few others to waterfalls.

We also saw a mountain goat family! Goats are my very favorite animal. I had no idea there were mountain goats in the Black Hills.

Before leaving for the Black Hills I asked my peonies to kindly wait for us to return before blooming. They bloomed the morning after we got back! Peonies are fickle, so I feel like this bodes well for the summer.

I've got a few dates that are still open for cakes in July, and then good availability in August and September. Don't wait though, because they fill fast!

With heart,
Elizabeth

I love white-on-white cakes because light and shadow do all of the visual storytelling. They are so timeless!

Facebook has recently informed me that it recommends turning my account into a home and garden account because "your home and garden content preforms 37% better on average." Uhhhhh....

So, to try to get it to show you this gorgeous cake, I'm going to mention how beautiful my peonies are! Unfortunately, they are being blown around by the wind right now and will probably lose all of their petals soon. I've spent a lot of time the last few days staring directly at my peonies so that I can maximize my enjoyment of them. They bloom for such a short time, but they sure are beautiful.

Do you have peonies? I hope they survived all of the storms and wind!

There we go. One part home & garden, one part cake. 💐+🎂=🥰

If Taylor Swift was coming back to the North Dakota State Fair this year, which cake with hand-painted macarons should I make for her?

If I actually received this call in July, I think I'd make her a Toy Story themed cake. Or possibly Grey's Anatomy. Or a cat themed cake!!

Taylor is one of my favorite images to paint on macarons. Her outfits are so colorful and iconic!

She needs to come to Minot to collect her cake from my house though. Or maybe she could send Travis to pick it up, but he needs to hold the box from the bottom and keep it chilled during transport. Put it on the floor of your car, Travis, not on the seat! Protect if from sun, heat, and humidity!

It's our 16th wedding anniversary this week! We were married at Scandinavian Heritage Park, the perfect cozy location for a couple of introverts.

We celebrated by voting. You get a sticker that says "You Betcha I voted" which is a very fun little reward.

I had the pleasure of making a floral graduation cake for Jeff's cousin who just graduated high school. I can't believe how fast she has grown. She was born right about the time Jeff and I started dating, which is crazy to think about.

Looking at our wedding photos makes me so happy. Look at those cute hipsters! Okay, I'm going to stop this post now because if I think about love too much, I cry.

If you see me crying someday, I'm probably not sad, I probably just thought too deeply about the beautiful and ephemeral nature of love.

Dad joke for you: "Happy birthday! This way you can have your LAKE and eat it too!"

But for real, landscape cakes are one of my specialties and I love creating them for you!

The puns are just a bonus that I throw in there as a little treat.

I had a lovely cake order for a young woman graduating high school who loves Victorian literature. I've never met her, but every cake for her has been awesome so I'm so glad I got to make her graduation cake too! I went for a Jane Austin vibe.

It was so hot out! If you saw me last week, that means you had the chance to behold my lame but wonderful sun-shirt. It's my official outfit of summer. I have a lot of messages for young women, but one of the top ones is to protect your skin! This sun-shirt is my best friend, and if I can rock it, you can too. (Also wear a hat, don't text while driving, and don't smoke!)

Jeff and I have had fun working on the garden. We are doing an experiment with eco-friendly grass. I'm pretty sure it will grow, but the question will be if it can survive the winter. I'll report back in spring 2027.

I spent our rainy saturday working on my flying fox (the Australian bat) embroidery. They look so cute and fuzzy! I'm going to put them in a fall tree because this hoop will be displayed in the autumn. Flying foxes were one of our favorite animals when we lived in Australia because they look like cats hanging from the trees.

On the hottest days I always need to close all the curtains in the house to keep it cool in here. It makes me so sad to hang out in the dark, so I brought up a little TV to watch the movie Ever After (1998) with Drew Barrymore. I highly recommend this movie! It's one of my favorites, and it has aged really well. It is excellent for spring!

One of the best parts about Felicity being a teenager is that I don't need to pretend not to like TV anymore. I love TV!!! The secret is out!!! Now I can watch it in the kitchen sometimes, such a treat!

I hope you'll be enjoying these cooler days coming up. I'll be doing lots of baking, because I haaaate turning on the oven when it's over 90 degrees outside. Lots of cakes and macarons to bake now that it's back in the 70s.

Thanks for all of your summer orders! Every order makes a huge difference for my family. 💚

Elizabeth

This sea turtle is SO CUTE!!! I hope real sea turtles are invited to this ocean themed birthday party.

Painting cakes like this is almost like crossing a tightrope for me. I sort of know what I want it to look like, but once I begin I need to cross that tight rope without looking down. Just painting, no thinking.

If I start to think, I'll fall!

Once I think I might be done with the trickiest part, I take a step back to asses, and then I design the rest of the cake around what I've created. So for this cake I knew I needed a sea turtle. I started painting this cute little guy in a trance, then stepped back and picked the colors for a sunset sky.

Thanks for trusting me to create beautiful cakes for you! I never know how they will look until they are done, but that's half the fun!
