She didn’t know how to help her daughter.💔
Lately, something had changed. The girl who used to share every little detail about her day had grown quieter. When her mom asked how school was going, she got the usual “fine.” When she asked if anything was wrong, she heard “nothing.”
Her mom wanted to help. She wanted to find the right words, ask the right questions, and somehow make everything better. But she was afraid of pushing too hard or saying something that would make her daughter shut down even more.
So one evening, instead of asking another question, she sat beside her and said, “You don’t have to tell me everything right now. I just want you to know I’m here.”
For a while, neither of them said much.
Then, little by little, her daughter began to talk.
Her mom couldn’t take away every difficult feeling or solve every problem. But she could listen without judgment. She could make sure her daughter knew she didn’t have to navigate everything alone.
And that was a place to start.
Sometimes, we assume we’ll know what to do when someone we love is struggling. But the truth is, many parents, friends, and neighbors worry about saying the wrong thing. They want to help but aren’t always sure how to recognize when someone needs support or where to turn for guidance.
Learning matters. Understanding matters. And knowing how to respond can make a difference.
