The tiny hummingbird hovering at the petunias has antennae. And six legs. It's not a bird.

A hummingbird clearwing moth hovers in front of flowers, extends a long proboscis, and drinks nectar while its wings beat fast enough to hum. The flight, the hovering, the flower preference — nearly identical to the real thing. But smaller, fuzzier, and lower to the ground.

🌿 The caterpillars feed on honeysuckle, viburnum, hawthorn, and cherry — not tomatoes. A hornworm-shaped caterpillar on honeysuckle is a hummingbird moth larva. Leave it.

The adults are active during the day — unusual for moths. They visit bee balm, phlox, verbena, and petunias. They can fly backward, hover in place, and fly in rain.

🐾 The one-second ID:

- Antennae on the head — moth. No bird has antennae.
- Clear patches in the wings — moth
- About half the size of a real hummingbird
- Fuzzier body, hovers lower and closer to the flower

Two completely unrelated animals arrived at the same flight design independently. The resemblance isn't inherited. It was built twice 🌿

Effingham Farmers Market This Saturday I will have some Dye Free Macarons, for folks that are allergic to the Red Dye 40, or any other Dye for that matter...Macarons are naturally Gluten Free as they are made with Almond Flour, so to be able to offer a Dye Free option for folks makes me happy...I will have two dozen in two different flavors for folks to try, along with other flavors as well....Come out Saturday and see what everyone else has...

Effingham Farmers Market This Saturday, I am going to have two special DYE FREE Macarons, two dozen in two different flavors will be "dye free" SO, if you are Gluten Free and the dyes bother you as well, you can now try a macaron. I had a couple folks ask about dye free last week and decided to make some. Its an all natural coloring, it has no dye in it. The white macarons are dye free with no coloring, but if I air brush a design on them, I cant really say in a sense, but with these they are in fact dye free..

What an incredible Opening Day for the 2026 Effingham Farmers Market season!

We are overwhelmed by the support shown by our community on Saturday morning. The turnout was absolutely amazing and, without a doubt, one of the largest crowds we've seen in years. Many of our vendors were completely sold out by 10 AM—or even earlier! 🥕🍓🧁

To every customer who came out to shop, visit with vendors, enjoy the entertainment, and support local businesses, THANK YOU. Your support means more than you know.

What many people don't see are the countless hours spent behind the scenes planning, organizing, recruiting vendors, coordinating entertainment, designing layouts, solving challenges, and working to make the Effingham Farmers Market the very best it can be. Seeing so many smiling faces and such an incredible turnout makes all of that hard work worthwhile.

Saturday's success wasn't just a win for the Effingham Farmers Market—it was a win for every farmer, baker, maker, artist, small business owner, and customer who believes in supporting local. We are incredibly grateful and excited to see our community come together in such a big way.

As wonderful as Opening Day was, we're just getting started! We hope you'll continue to make the Effingham Farmers Market part of your Saturday morning routine each week through October 31st.
