I've never once met a couple who is actually as awkward in photos as they think they are.

If you've already decided that you and your partner are just bad in front of the camera, I want you to know that's probably not true. What you're feeling is normal, first-time nerves, and trust me, I get them too!

Almost everyone tenses up at the start of a session. Suddenly you realize you have elbows and don't know what to do with them (or your hands either!). You smile feels forced and weird.

That's not because you're bad at this. It's because being watched and photographed isn't something people do very often.

My job isn't to get you to pose like a super model. It's to give you something to actually do together, walk, talk, laugh, so your body relaxes and your face follows along. Then I'll gently guide you into small changes, if they're needed, so you never feel like you don't know what to do and you can actually start having fun.

So if you're nervous about being photographed, you're not the exception. You're actually the rule. And it gets easier a lot faster than you'd expect!

Will I ever be tired of visiting Hills and Dales Estate? Probably never. It's deeply romantic, beautiful, and feels set apart from every day life. There's always some new spot that I discover, some new flower in bloom. And, of course, there's Mr Cat, with his toe-thumbs and loud purr, so assured that everyone is there just to visit him and give him pats. And, well, we can look at the garden if we MUST, but scritches first, please. He even fancied himself the star of Haley & Wes' engagement session for a moment, because why wouldn't he be?

It was such a pleasant evening that we were all just a little wistful saying goodbye, already talking about coming back to visit again.

You only get to experience your wedding day from one point of view: your own.

I spent years photographing weddings trying to capture only what my couple was seeing and feeling in the moment. In 2014, I stepped away from running my own business for almost a decade, though I kept photographing weddings the whole time, as an associate for other photographers instead of serving my own couples.

When I relaunched my business in 2023 and started booking weddings of my own again, I realized that old approach left out a huge chunk of the story and that one of the most valuable things I could offer my couple was my own perspective of their day.

Now I and my team photograph the whole day from the most amazing multiple pov. The moments happening at cocktail hour while you're off taking portraits; the way your grandmother watches from her seat as you say your vows. Your people are just as much a part of your story as you are, and I don't want any part to go unnoticed.

I'm not just documenting the highlights of your day anymore. I'm paying attention to the textures, the vibe, to everyone in the room who matters to you, because that's the only way to actually capture what your wedding day felt like, not just what it looked like.

I love the creative challenge of building a gallery that actually reflects a couple's design choices, and turning a color palette and mood board into photos that capture the whole feeling of the day, not just the look of it.

What does that actually look like on a wedding day? I take the design board, color palette, and everything I've learned about the vibe the couple wants, and turn it into a scavenger hunt that runs all day long. I'm intentional about how I photograph the venue so that it actually reflects that specific wedding; I keep an eye out throughout the day for guest fashion that complements the color palette, or small details that reinforce the design. And I pay attention to how light, texture, and framing shape the overall feeling of the photos.

For this wedding, I pulled inspiration from their palette of lavender, peach, blush, and green, as well as the romantic, elegant garden-party feeling they were chasing. I leaned into the lush greenery at Gardens In The Gorge, the whimsical charm of the cottages, the elegance in their fashion, and event the river views and the sound of the harpist playing through the ceremony and cocktail hour.

The result is a gallery that feels alive and vibrant. Three dimensional. A complete story that actually transports you through the day, instead of a flat view of its highlights.

Most couples think an engagement session is about getting a few pretty photos for save-the-dates, but honestly, that's the smallest part of what it actually does.

Engagement sessions aren't required for every wedding I shoot, but here's what happens during one, beyond the photos. It's usually the first time you're in front of a camera together, which means it's also the first time those nerves and 'are we awkward?' thoughts show up. We work through poses and prompts until we find what actually feels natural for you two, and somewhere in there the awkwardness starts to wear off.

You figure out where to put your hands. What feels stiff vs what feels like you. And by the end of the session, you're feeling comfortable and carefree, just being yourself.

So when the wedding day comes around? Those first time nerves aren't showing up when you should be focused on being present. They already happened at your engagement session, in a much lower-stakes moment, and you walk into your wedding day more confident than when you started.

That's the REAL reason engagement sessions matter. The photos are a nice bonus. What matters more is that you get to work through the nerves before the day you can't get back!
