Happy Memorial Day Weekend! We are open Sunday with a terrific rhubarb French toast special.

Custard challah with a rhubarb compote, whipped cream, white chocolate ganache, and sous vide candied rhubarb! The rhubarb isn't just for show, it's my new favorite way of preparing it.

By cooking it low, slow, and level we're able to get wonderfully delicate yet stable pieces of rhubarb that have the perfect bite to them. Not stringy, not mushy, just a pleasant snap with a tartness balanced by an orange simple syrup.

Probably went well over the top today considering everyone is likely out of town, but if you're not then stop by the bakery and say hi! We'll be here until 2!

Oh and of course we got this rhubarb locally through ValleyHUB KVCC from Silly Goose Acres!

Tomorrow's Sunday brunch special is croque madame!

This cheesey fork-and-knife breakfast sandwich gets its name from the crunch of perfectly grilled bread. Top it off with a mornay sauce and a jammy egg and you're in breakfast bliss.

Enjoy brunch at the bakery tomorrow while listening to the KSO brass trio! We'll have extra seating and space as the concert is in the Columbia atrium. So if you've had trouble getting a spot at brunch in the past, have no fear! Tomorrow is your day!

Also, we've picked up some fantastic rhubarb at the Kalamazoo Farmers Market and this weekend sees the first batch of our rhubarb croissant! I'll post more about it later but we've made some changes to it that have worked out so well.

See you at brunch tomorrow! Very excited for the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra Bras Trio!!

05/14/2026

The Kalamazoo Symphony Brass Trio will be performing this Sunday at the bakery! Edward Hickman on trombone, Scott Thornburg on trumpet, and Paul Clifton on french horn.

This is part of the community concert series the KSO puts on throughout the year. We're grateful to live in a city that has such a rich music scene that we even have a symphony. We're even more grateful that the KSO is as community focused as they are, putting on concerts like this all over town free to the public!

Music will start at 11, brunch is at 10, and the bakery opens at 7:30. This Sunday!

Founded in 1978 by Judy and Ken Sarkozy, Sarkozy Bakery was built on the belief that food, labor and community are inseparable.

Over the years, that philosophy has shaped how the bakery operates, from the way it makes bread to the way it supports its employees and the community around it.

Here's a little Monday special to take the edge off the start of your week. Rhubarb tarts!

A pâte brisée crust with layers of white chocolate ganache, lemon curd, and rhubarb compote, topped with a tempered white chocolate raspberry medallion.

Is it a little over the top? Maybe! But we have to do what we can to get people in here on a Monday. We're open every day of the week but people are used to the good ol days when we were closed Sunday and Monday. Not anymore! The bakery doors are open every Monday from 7:30-5!

We've got a few things in the works this weekend for all the moms out there! (and the offspring trying to make moms happy)

We're adding avocado toast to Sunday's brunch (along with nests and b&g)! Grilled sesame sourdough, loaded with avocado, your choice of egg, then sprinkled with pickled red onions, micro greens, and flakey sea salt.

And if you're looking to pick up a lil treat, the lavender polenta cakes have been wonderful this season! Thank you to Shades of Lavender Farm in Mattawan for hooking us up with this culinary grade. The GOOD stuff.

Bakery opens at 7:30, brunch starts at 10:00, and the one and only Tom Duffield plays from 11-1! See you then! Or today. Or both!

It's a beautiful day for a farmers market!

Opening Day of the summer Kzoo Farm Market is admittedly a little chilly but nothing we're not used to in Michigan.

There's already fantastic Kalamazoo grown produce available here. Rhubarb, spring onions, aaaaand of course RAMPS! This is probably your last chance to get ramps from the farmers here but we'll have ramp and parmesan croissants for another week or two.

Come say hi and support your local farmers! Maybe get a little basket treat while you're at it?

It's art week at Sarkozy Bakery! There's a lot to describe and some important details for this week! So read on:

First of all Art Hop is this Friday and we'll be staying open late to host the wonderfully skilled, Melody Allen!

Melody's show is focusing on "play" as demonstrated through her incredible illustrations of birds. A combination of pastels, and mixed media collage, every one of these pieces is striking with a distinctly fun nature.

The show is this Friday, May 1st (tomorrow!) from 5-8pm and will also feature the inimitable Tom Duffield on keys! As always we'll have the customary complimentary art hop snacks and booze. Don't get too wild though, this isn't Up and Under (rip). And if you're significantly hungry we'll be serving up pretzel plates and pizzas!

Also, we had the pleasure to be invited to the Kalamazoo Institute of Art for a "food as art" reception in conjunction with Heidi Weiss's talk of her mural, "(Looking For) A Soft Place to Land."

Heidi's work is incredible and her focus on collaboration in her work truly resonated with us at the bakery. It's easy and simple to give one person all the credit, whether it's Judy or me, but the reality is there's nearly two dozen of us at the bakery that work together every day to make this all possible. Whether it's a loaf of sourdough, an almond croissant, or two amazing custom desserts for a one-off event.

Bakers (and managers (and friends)), Julia Ftacek and Rachel Meszaros put together a rhubarb and lemon tart garnished with a tempered white chocolate feather as well as a petit four based off our Rigo Jansci cake decorated with a dandelion seed. Both were delicious and really evoked Heidi Weiss's and Chafe Hensley's mural.

It's been a wonderful week of art and birds and baking! Looking forward to this weekend.

Here's a little peak at some mini hand pies we made for the president's performance at the WMU Theatre production of Sweeney Todd!

Chocolate raspberry pie with a drip of beat root caramel. Admittedly, the beat root lost its color as it dried, but so does what we were trying to invoke. One person said it was repulsively on theme! So we'll mark that as a success.

Thank you to the bakers who stepped up for this project as well as WMU Theater for inviting us! The show was fantastic!

The ramp harvest was incredible this year so we've got plenty to use for ramp croissants!

Topped with a hearty amount of fresh parmesan that pairs excellently with he garlicky-oniony ramp flavor, these are a fantastic savory pastry for anyone looking for a morning (or lunch(or dinner)) snack!

We're making these fresh every single morning for the foreseeable future, so no need to rush in, but we do look forward to seeing you!

The Kalamazoo Marathon is this weekend and the bakery will be open for all your carbo loading needs!

If you're a spectator, take the 3-5 hour gap inbetween seeing your runner off and watching them finish by hanging out at the bakery. We're not too far from Bronson Park.

And if you're a runner or volunteer, we're offering you a 15% discount! Just show us your race bib and we'll show you the baked goods.

The marathon is Sunday and will NOT close down our road, so feel free to drive in though expect some crossing delays. I'll include a map to help. Parking in front, and FREE parking in the back of our building. Yes that's right, FREE PARKING in your downtown! An entire lot's worth.

Let me know if you have any questions!
