i am definitely not as active on this page as i know i should be. the truth is, the past couple of years have been incredibly difficult for my family.
i do my best to stay as transparent as possible with everybody in my life; i think transparency within our relationships is important, especially as a small business owner. it’s so easy to overlook the fact that many small business owners have real lives + families, and the everyday circumstances we all face, business owners do too. some of us work solo & run our businesses alone, some have partners, and some have teams.
regardless, we’re all human. life happens. sometimes it’s smooth sailing, and sometimes we hit rough waters.
this past week has been a week of rough waters.
some of you know, but for those that don’t, i’ll get into it–
my 11 year old, Mikey, was a micropreemie at birth. he was born at 25 weeks gestation, weighed 1lb 10oz, and spent 127 days in the NICU. at what should’ve been 37 weeks gestation, he was 2.5 months old & underwent his first surgery; a ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus due to a bilateral hemorrhage in his brain that occurred at birth, and the shunt was the “cure.”
as he grew, he was diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy & dystonia. Mikey is verbal, FULL of personality, and is quite literally a miracle child. he’s defied all odds, and although sometimes we face minor setbacks, he somehow always pushes through and comes out stronger on the other side.
last tuesday, he was scheduled for a surgery to place an intrathecal baclofen pump. attached is a photo explaining what that is, and how it works. this surgery is super routine, and Mikey’s team of doctors have spent years evaluating him, and preparing us for this surgery. surgery came and went, he did great, and we faced no complications post-op. the following day he did well, he seemed totally normal, and we were hopeful to be discharged by friday.
unfortunately, early thursday morning, he woke me up complaining of a severe headache & said he felt he was going to throw up. i was able to call his nurses into evaluate, but with symptoms worsening by the minute, we knew something was wrong. he was taken for a CT and sure enough, after 11 years of outstanding service, his VP shunt had unexpectedly failed. he was rushed into emergency surgery for a shunt revision in his brain, and thankfully, that surgery ran smooth & was successful.
after surgery, he struggled with waking up. we spent almost 12 hours HEAVILY monitoring him, a few of those hours spent in the PICU, and thankfully once anesthesia wore off, he started to wake and his neurological state was dramatically improved.
however, since then, Mikey has had a very difficult time being able to successfully eat. he hasn’t really eaten anything since tuesday of last week, and at this point in time, the only requirement for discharge is to begin eating again without vomiting. anything he’s tried eating, won’t stay down.
we’ve spoken with his medical team & we have a plan of action in place to get his tummy back to normal, but prayers & positive thoughts for this little dude go a LONG way. we’re hopeful in the next day or two we will be able to get him back on track to being discharged and coming home. my boy is the most resilient human i’ve ever met & i know he will pull through just fine.
with the second surgery taking place unexpectedly, his recovery has become a tad bit more difficult, which has also doubled the amount of follow up appointments and has now doubled the length of his hospital stay. as a small business owner, the financial burden of something like this does not come easy, but i am not one to ask for a handout. i will however ask for more business, and more opportunities to serve my clients the best tasting & prettiest custom sugar cookies you’ll get your hands on. if cookies aren’t something you’re in need of, and you would like to make a donation, Mikey’s GoFundMe is located here:

otherwise, my books are mostly open & i am ready to get to work. spooky season is creeping around the corner, birthdays, bridals & bach parties, baby showers, you name it, i’d be honored to help. your orders help my family more than i can even say, and aside from the financial assistance, putting my creative brain to work is the best therapy a girl could ask for.
either way, a quick uplifting thought or a prayer for my little dude is the best way to be of assistance right now. this has been one of the hardest things i’ve had to witness as a mama, but i am proud his resilience, strength, and ability to continue pushing forward even when it feels like it’s all just too much.
if you’re a parent going through something difficult, i want you to know my inbox is always open for a chat. i know what it’s like to feel alone & lost in life, and sometimes we truly just need a friend.
i see you.
i hear you.
i feel you.
i’m here. always.
