We’ve had so many new faces stopping by Between the Vines lately that I thought it might be a good time to reintroduce ourselves—and share a little about how this tiny farm stand came to be.”
We’re Liz and Mark, and Hector wasn’t always home. It was the place we loved so much that we finally decided to make it our forever home…”
🌿 How We Ended Up Between the Vines
Sometimes you find a place that feels like home long before you actually live there.
For Mark and me, that place was Hector.
We came here from Rochester after years of loving the Finger Lakes and dreaming about what it might be like to actually live here. Eventually, we decided life was too short to keep saying “someday.”
So we took the leap and made Hector our forever home.
And we really did take a leap.
Mark has spent the past 32 years as a hospice social worker with Rochester General, and when we first moved here, he was commuting about an hour and a half each way every day for work.
That’s how much we wanted to be here.
Fortunately, an opportunity eventually opened up that allowed Mark to stay with Rochester General while bringing his work much closer to home. Today, he supports patients and families across communities in Seneca, Wayne and Ontario counties—continuing the work he has devoted so much of his life to, but now from the place we love.
Back in Rochester, Mark and I also had a small business together—something we affectionately called Mark’s “fun job.” We loved working together, and I don’t think either of us realized at the time that we’d eventually find ourselves doing it again.
Because when we moved here, I was searching for something of my own, too.
I wanted sustainable work that allowed me to build a life here while doing something I’ve always loved:
feeding people.
And that’s how Between the Vines began.
It started simply—some sourdough, a little roadside stand and the hope that maybe a few people would stop.
Then it became ours.
I’m usually behind the bread and focaccia. 🥖
Mark has earned his title as The Cookie Guy. 🍪
And our daughter Julia occasionally brings a little bit of France to the stand with her beautiful French pastries.
There are early mornings, late-night bakes, flour-covered counters and plenty of “Do you think people are going to like this?”
But we’re doing it together.
We’re not trying to be the biggest farm stand.
We want to be the little one you remember.
The one you discover while driving the back roads of Hector. The one you tell somebody else about. The one you make a point of stopping at the next time you’re traveling through Seneca Lake wine country.
Because Between the Vines isn’t just where we sell what we bake.
It’s part of the life Mark and I took a chance on when we left Rochester and made Hector our forever home.
Our family. Our little business. Our little piece of heaven between the vines 3774 County Rd 2, Hector.🌿
And every loaf, cookie and pastry that leaves our stand lets us share a little bit of it with you.🤗🍞🍪❤️
