Yesterday, Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers (UFW), passed away. We join the chorus of voices celebrating her tremendous impact on labor, women's rights, and social justice movements across the United States, Latin America, and the world.
The compassion, bravery, and spirit of solidarity she demonstrated throughout her life were always at the heart of her activism, the foundation she created to support grassroots organizing, and how she used her voice to speak out on issues that resonated with so many people fighting for justice.
In 1994 we had the privilege of collaborating with Dolores Huerta, among a number of leading activists of the time, on a campaign where she sampled a new flavor, Deep Dark Chocolate, and called it "Delicious!" She became an honorary member of the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream for Life Club from that day on.
As an aspiring social justice company, we are always grounded in the relationships we have the honor of building with those on the front lines of the movements that strive to make the world a better place for all. Her belief that every person can be a force for change continues to guide how we work alongside the many communities that make our ice cream possible – from the farmers and farmworkers growing our ingredients to the bakers making our brownie chunks.
We are proud of our ability to bring the unique power of ice cream to convene people for joy and justice, but we could never do that work alone. Our movements are more powerful for the leaders like Dolores Huerta who relentlessly fight for people power in the face of what could seem like insurmountable challenges.
As we look toward the future, toward the work ahead to build a world where all are treated with fairness and dignity, we will hold dear Dolores's most famous words: ¡Sí, se puede!
