Mardi Gras is French and translates to “Fat or Shrove Tuesday”. The cupcakes are an option, but most famous is the “King Cake”, which contains a plastic baby symbolizing the birth of Baby Jesus and also commemorates the Feast of the Epiphany. If you get the piece of cake with the baby inside, supposedly you will have good luck and prosperity, and you are king(or queen) for the day, and, as a bonus, you get to host the next party 😁 The most famous place for Mardi Gras in the USA is New Orleans. The season is called Carnival and it begins in January and ends on Fat Tuesday. Fat Tuesday…this is the last day for one to eat, rich, fatty foods, including cakes, cookies, pastries, and red meat until Lent is over. (Easter) There are parades, street parties, and mask balls. The official colors are purple(justice), green(faith), and gold(power). The king cake (light cinnamon flavor) is not soft like a regular cake as it has yeast in it and has a dense bread-like texture. It is usually formed in a round circle, covered with glaze, and sprinkled with purple, green, and gold sprinkles or sanding sugar.
