I really enjoy the energy that gray + yellow bring as a couple. They’re grounded yet playful, serious yet cheerful, stoic yet lighthearted.

For this piece, I wanted to translate that tension into something that felt like it was opening, shifting, and coming alive as it moved upward. That’s why I’m calling this piece “Unfurl.”

Jasmine Rae Cakes really pioneered this kind of blossoming, sculptural texture in cake, and I’ve admired that language for a long time. This piece was my own exploration in that spirit. She’ll be teaching a workshop on her technique next month with Sweet Heather Anne | Cake Studio| Ann Arbor, Michigan through Azara K. & Jasmine Rae, and I’m genuinely sad I won’t be able to make it!

Architectural forms freed by wandering wire. 🏛️

As I’m exploring “cake as sculpture”, I’m increasingly interested in allowing the cake structure itself to do the talking. Geometry that’s offset, suspended, interrupted, and shaped by its own negative space tells a a different story than cake plus decoration.

This piece came from giving myself room to play—using unconventional techniques, responding to the material as I worked, and letting the final form emerge rather than planning every detail in advance.
