The Redhead team is going camping for Labor Day weekend! I grew up camping but this is a first for my kiddos and I can’t wait for them to experience it.

You might have noticed a slight change on the pick up day this week. For just this weekend, pickup is on Friday instead of Saturday. This also means that TODAY is the last day to place your orders! We’ll be back to our normal schedule next week.

You guys sure did show up for my first day back! I had the largest number of loaves ever preordered. I know I didn’t give
you much of a choice with the smaller menu, but wow!

To my long-time customers, thank you for being here. Thank you for always allowing me the opportunity to put my family first, since that’s what this is all for. Welcome back! 🥳

After two months of no baking, I am finally feeling ready to return. My first day for pickup will be next Saturday, August 22nd. For this first day back, I’ll be keeping it simple with classic loaves, jalapeño cheddar, and rosemary garlic— the fan favorites! As I ease back into things, I hope to bring back more of your favorite items.

Your sourdough starter isn’t dead. The starter that’s been in the fridge for months, has a thick layer of gray liquid (that’s h***h and it’s perfectly normal), and smells like straight up acetone? Yes, that starter can still make wonderful bread!

My starter sat in the fridge, untouched for over a month. To a new baker, it would have looked like a lost cause. However, after lots of love and regular feedings, it came back to life and is making beautiful bread again.

I simply pulled it out of the fridge and started feeding it at a 1:3:3 ratio (that’s 1 part starter, 3 parts water, 3 parts flour), twice a day. It did take about a week to be at full strength. The longer you neglect your starter, the longer it’ll take to come back. If you have an old starter in the fridge don’t toss it! Give it some love and attention and you’ll be back to baking.

I’m glad to have my starter and homemade bread back in my life. I’m looking forward to sharing lots of great loaves with you guys soon ❤️

Last week we celebrated our Henry’s life. I want to thank everyone that came out to pay their respects and support our family. We saw bread friends, our friends from the Olive Tap, the Dole, fellow vendors, and of course our friends and family. It was truly the most beautiful service. You all have been so wonderful in supporting our family during this time, whether it’s been through donations, our meal train, or even a kind message. There really are no words to describe losing a child but this community has lifted us up in some pretty amazing ways. I’ll never stop being grateful.

If anyone else would like to support us during this time, our meal train and GoFundMe are still open as I continue to take time off of baking and we focus on spending time as a family. Donations also help us in covering medical and funeral expenses. When I do return, I’m excited to find new ways to include and honor Henry in our family business and keep him a part of this community 🤍

Sweet, sweet boy 🤍

After all of our options were exhausted, we made the incredibly difficult decision to withdraw medical care and allow our Henry to pass peacefully in our arms Saturday evening. He was surrounded by love and felt no pain. We are forever changed by this tiny little life. Please keep our family in your hearts and prayers as we navigate this incredible loss.

Henry has had an overwhelming week.

Last Monday started off dramatic and ended with reintubating for a larger tube. He recovered well and was great through Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Thursday, his CO2 was climbing and he was becoming acidotic. He maxed out the settings on his conventional ventilator so they attempted to switch him to a more gentle ventilator (oscillator) that would help blow off more CO2. He didn’t tolerate the switch and he was stuck on the conventional ventilator with more damaging pressures. He was extremely unstable and crashed multiple times, requiring bagging with manual breaths.

Friday started off okay, but again his CO2 started climbing and the decision was made to reattempt the oscillator. We were informed that if he didn’t tolerate the oscillator or start improving, he was pretty much out of options.

Fortunately, he tolerated the oscillator beautifully (with lots and lots of morphine) and his CO2 and ph corrected. He was given ibuprofen to treat his heart murmur that had started reopening.

On Saturday, the new issue was a high blood pressure and kidney injury. Apparently high blood pressure is never seen in preemies so he had all specialists on deck. It was resolved with some medications and the decision was made to switch from ibuprofen to Tylenol to continue closing the PDA murmur without causing anymore damage to his kidneys.

Right now he’s doing much better. He’s still considered critical, but we’re calling him “critically stable”. He’s on very high settings on the ventilator but we’ve been able to start weaning some of them, so we have a tiny bit of wiggle room if he does start to go downhill again. At this point, his heart murmur needs to be closed in order for him to improve. It’ll be rechecked on Friday. Since he’s not stable enough to be transported, he’ll be scheduled for a corrective surgery if the PDA hasn’t closed by then.

As for his lungs, his atelectasis (collapsing) has improved. The chronic lung disease (BPD) and edema is worsening which is why the PDA needs to be closed. But his nurse says that as they grow, undamaged lung tissue and alveoli will grow and improve his lung function.

He’s still so fragile and things are always changing so fast, but we’re so grateful he’s still here after the week he’s had. His team is amazing and he’s truly in the best hands. Please continue thinking about us and praying for Henry’s progress ❤️

I want to update everyone on little Henry’s status. Thank you all for rooting for him and thinking of our family ❤️

Henry is officially two weeks old and his gestational age is 25 weeks and 5 days. He’s gained some weight over the last week and he’s now 730 grams. He’s had a pretty good week. He got his first bath and we’ve done lots of skin to skin. He’s been weaned from his humidity since his skin has transitioned to normal baby skin. His eye should be opening any day. And he loves his head rubbed and his hands held. He’ll bust out of his swaddle with any chance he gets.

He does have a pretty significant PDA heart murmur rated a 7/10. This type of heart murmur is expected of preemies, especially babies so small. They’re currently using Tylenol try to close it but it doesn’t usually do much on the first round.

Because the symptoms of his PDA have gotten more severe, the current plan of action is to move on to ibuprofen next. He’ll have an echo done tomorrow to see if there’s been any changes. If the ibuprofen doesn’t work, Henry will likely receive a piccolo, which is basically a little stent placed in his heart to close the hole. It’s very minimally invasive. He has to be 750 grams to qualify.

Once his PDA is closed, a lot of his symptoms should improve. Overall, he’s still doing good. All of this is very standard in a baby born at 23 weeks and his doctors aren’t too concerned.

I am back and forth to the hospital every day so knowing the family is being fed and cared for has alleviated a lot of stress! Happy one week birthday Henry! 🥳

He’s done really great for such a little guy. I’ve gotten to do skin to skin the past few days which has been great.

He had a blood transfusion a couple days ago which has really stabilized his hemoglobin. He had a cranial ultrasound this morning to check for brain bleeds and it came back normal which is amazing. It’ll be checked again in 3 weeks. He does have a pretty significant PDA heart murmur, but it’s to be expected in a preemie his age. He’s not showing us that he’s bothered by it, so it’s being monitored for now. Right now, his care team is just following his lead and adjusting his ventilator and fluids as he needs. He’s currently up to 6 mL at his feeds and he’s tolerating it really well!

I’ve been home since Friday night and we’re adjusting to splitting time between home and the hospital. We’ve been extremely lucky to have as much support as we do to care for the boys during hospital visits and keep us fed.

Keep praying for our little Henry and keep us in your thoughts. He’s had such an awesome first week but we still have a long road ahead of us!
