Retrograde Coffee Roasters was founded in 2014 by baristas Danielle Connor and Casey Lanski. They began roasting coffee out of their home kitchen and would truck their coffee cart around to countless events.

Retrograde have since upgraded to become proud owners of their SF-25. However, their focus remains in the details with small batch coffee roasting and a value-based approach.

Their first coffee shop is in the heart of West Sonoma County in Downtown Sebastpol. They are also opening a satellite cafe BARN 5400 in Petaluma, CA. The SF-25 remains at the heart of their operation and we look forward to seeing their continued growth.

Cat & Cloud Coffee was created by owners Chris Baca, Jared Truby and Charles Jack whose mission is to inspire connection, by creating memorable experiences.

They started from humble beginning in 2015 to opening the doors on their first shop in 2016. Their business has seen tremendous growth and affection from their community.

In 2023, Cat & Cloud added the SF-75 roaster to their team. Affectionately called “Junior”. Standing three times the size of their original roaster, Junior represented more than increased capacity. It symbolized the beginning of their next chapter, allowing Cat & Cloud to serve more people without compromising the quality they’re known for. We are proud to be a continuing partner in their roasting journey.

Great roasting doesn’t end when the batch drops.

The best roastmasters rely on their senses every step of the way—watching color, listening for the cracks, smelling development, and finally cupping every roast for quality control. Every cup is an opportunity to evaluate, refine, and roast even better the next time.

It is essential to develop a roaster’s sensory skills, allowing them to detect subtle changes in bean color, aroma, identify defects and sound.

The new era at San Franciscan Roaster Co. proudly includes team members Brent Kennedy and Paris Kennedy.

Brent Kennedy became the first Kennedy brother to enter the coffee industry, beginning his roasting journey in 1998 on a San Franciscan Roaster. His original SF-25, built in 1992, was the 7th SF-25 ever produced by the San Franciscan Roaster Company—a machine that helped shape decades of craftsmanship.

Growing up in the roastery and coffee shop, Paris Kennedy developed a passion for coffee from an early age. She learned to roast at just 14 years old while also working as a barista, gaining hands-on experience in every aspect of the business.

Today, Brent and Paris are both Arabica Q Graders, bringing deep expertise and a shared passion for exceptional coffee. As the company enters its next chapter, they look forward to investing in the team, honoring the past, and building an even stronger future under the leadership of Dave Marson and Matthew Sewell—one roast at a time.

San Franciscan Roaster is proud to welcome Matthew Sewell as our new Chief Executive Officer.

Matthew returns to San Franciscan Roaster after previously holding engineering and operational leadership roles in high-tech manufacturing and a vehicle start-up. Matthew brings to us considerable experience in executive manufacturing leadership positions, including large-scale production and operational initiatives. Matthew is also an accomplished coffee roaster, having previously founded a roastery and winning a Good Food Award for coffee in 2015.

Together, Matthew and our new owner Dave Marson have begun implementing a strategic plan focused on strengthening operations, supporting customers, investing in manufacturing capabilities and positioning the company for sustainable long-term growth.

“This company helped build businesses, launch careers and shape coffee programs around the world,” says Matthew. “We are investing in the future while preserving the quality and craftsmanship that made San Franciscan respected throughout the industry.”

Meet our new owner, Dave Marson.

Most well known for founding Nature’s Bakery before its sale to KIND and Mars, Dave brings decades of advanced manufacturing and operational leadership experience to our company. Throughout his career, he has led the growth and transformation of multiple food and consumer product businesses, including recently acquired Marson Foods.

Before he became owner, Dave was first a San Franciscan customer. Drawn to the company's reputation within the specialty coffee industry and the quality of its products, Dave saw a rare opportunity to invest in a brand with significant long-term potential.

“This company means a great deal to a lot of people,” Dave says. “There is real history here, real craftsmanship and real loyalty from customers who believed in this brand for decades. We are committed to honoring what made this company special while building the foundation necessary for its future.”

We are committed to honoring what made this company special while building the foundation necessary for its future.”

Dave Marson and his wife, Jan Marson, founded Nature’s Bakery, the nationwide snack bar company later acquired by Kind, part of Mars Inc., before launching waffle manufacturer Marson Foods.

Sewell returns to San Franciscan after previously holding operations and engineering roles with the company. He also was a founder and operator of Reno-based specialty coffee roasting company Magpie Coffee Roasters.
