Uncovered a video I forgot to share this summer of an old backpack I covered with hammered flowers from my garden. It’s truly a beautiful capture of my summer flower garden. The process is so simple but a bit repetitive and time consuming (sorry to my carpal tunnel). I used a variety of coreopsis, cosmos and dyer’s chamomile to decorate it. I’ve already got plans for sowing more varieties of all of these flowers for more hammering this coming year!

I made Oma’s spitzbuben cookies yesterday for our family and wanted to repost this video I made a few years ago. It’s one of my favorite winter traditions.

I have five nieces ages 8-11 and every year I try to get creative with their gifts. In past years I’ve made things like felt food toys, personalized super hero capes, and letter-shaped pillows. Now that they’re getting older and more specific in their preferences I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make surprise balls and have the creative, crafty element be in the wrapping. Surprise balls are a series of small gifts wrapped between layers of colorful crepe paper. As the recipient unravels each layer the gifts are revealed. I thoroughly enjoyed both the curating of each set of gifts and the wrapping of each ball. I can’t wait to watch the unraveling ensue! (And yes I’m mostly whispering in the voiceover to not wake up my precariously asleep children. I’m this committed to spreading my love for surprise balls!)

I’ll have a table at the Maker’s Market at this Saturday December 6th! Come shop plant dyed textiles, ornaments, greeting cards, flower presses and more! Starts at 11am and goes until 4pm. There are so many great markets happening on Saturday so if I were you, I’d make a shop local day of it! Swipe for a preview of what I’ve been making and check out the highlight in my profile to see behind the scenes.

This year I went all in on Cosmos and I’m so glad I did! So many gorgeous varieties. I’ve been drying and pressing them for future dye experiments.

Christmas cookies 2024. I made over 200 of my Oma’s Spitzbuben cookies this year and I’m grateful that each year seems to inspire a need for more cookie boxes to share!

The homemade gift I am most excited about this year is a lilac enfleurage solid perfume balm. The idea for this gift started back in April when the lilacs were blooming. Enfleurage is a perfuming technique in which fragrance is captured in fat. I spent the short lilac blooming season placing blossoms in glass pans coated with coconut oil, replacing with new flowers every day or two. The process was sometimes meditative and other times monotonous and the pollen from the lilac’s heady scent gave our allergies a run for their money but eventually the oil started to smell like lilacs! I also pressed some blossoms to use in the packaging of the perfume. Fast forward to December, I took my small jar of oil and combined it with a bit of beeswax to help keep it solid. I scanned my pressed lilacs and made some labels and little cards to go with the perfume and was very happy that it all turned out quite how I imagined it 8 months ago! I enjoyed this so much that another round of lilac enfleurage is on the list for 2025.
