🌾 What’s That Liquid on Your Sourdough Starter? It’s Called H***h! šŸ«™(This one was hiding in the back of my fridge.)

If you’ve ever opened your sourdough jar and found a layer of grayish or brown liquid sitting on top, don’t panic — that’s h***h, and it’s perfectly normal! Here’s what you need to know:

āø»

šŸ”¬ What is H***h?
H***h is a naturally occurring alcohol that forms when your sourdough starter gets hungry. It’s a byproduct of fermentation and shows up when the wild yeast in your starter has run out of food (flour).

āø»

🧪 Why Does It Happen?
H***h forms when:
• Your starter hasn’t been fed in a while
• The environment is too warm
• The ratio of flour to water is off

It’s your starter’s way of saying, ā€œFeed me!ā€

āø»

šŸ’Ŗ How to Fix It:
1. Stir It In or Pour It Off: H***h won’t hurt you. You can stir it back in for a tangier flavor or pour it off for a milder one.
2. Feed Your Starter: Discard half of the starter and feed it with equal parts flour and water by weight.
3. Repeat if Needed: If your starter is sluggish, give it 1–2 feedings a day until it’s bubbly and active within 5-8 hours of feeding again.

āø»

🌟 Healthy Starter Tips:
• Keep it in a cool, stable environment
• Feed it consistently (2xdaily if on the counter, weekly if refrigerated)
• Watch for signs of activity: bubbles, rise, and a tangy smell

āø»

šŸ“š Your sourdough starter is a living culture — a little h***h just means it needs some love. Keep it fed and happy, and you’ll be baking beautiful bread in no time!
