As most small businesses face struggles during these times, we find ourselves not immune. We feel fortunate that it looks like The Dutch Oven Bakery will survive, however we need to make some changes, at least temporarily.
First, in an effort to give our staff that have remained dedicated through this craziness a break, we will be closed on Sundays. Our hours of business will be Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30 AM until 5:30 PM.
We are also making some major changes to our deli/café area. There are a few reasons for this. Ingredient costs have went through the roof, if we are lucky enough to get what we order. Our staff feels like we are letting customers down when we have to tell you that we are out of a product. It is getting more and more difficult to get product. Even though it is a global supply chain issue, we still do not like not being able to satisfy the customer. This decision was also made to help alleviate some of the stresses our employees are under. Finally, staffing shortages do not allow us to give each customer the attention you deserve. This was a tough decision to make, but we strongly believe it is the correct one to save this business.
The changes to the deli area are as follows. We are temporarily ceasing all made to order meals. We will however offer some alternatives. We will continue our soups and add premade sandwiches and other grab and go options.
Our hope is that things return to normal soon. I fully believe there is a silver lining in every situation, you just have to look for it. We are going to try to take advantage of this setback and learn new ways to provide our customers with even better products and services. While we are disappointed to make this decision, we are very excited about some of the new ideas we have discussed.
We apologize for the temporary changes and thank you in advance for your understanding and for your continued support. We truly have great customers and we appreciate each of you.

Thank you to everyone that came to support Conner Sunday. We were able to sell quite a few slices of French Toast, got some very nice donations and have some fun. It is great to know that we live and work in a community that supports each other. We are also very happy that we were able to match 50% of the all the money collected. Thanks again for all of the support.
Conner, we hope this helps at least a little bit.

Look at how we've grown. Rob and Erika purchased this bakery in 2019 with the thought that after 80 years it was ready for a growth spurt. We have definitely felt growing pains over the past two years, but we are very excited about what the future holds. Now we just need to get that kid in the picture to quit growing so fast.
Thank you to all of our great employees and you customers that have supported us through this adventure.

Had a great opening day at the Harbor Springs Farmers Market. Two of our bakers, Darcy and Nina, were also able to get out of the kitchen for a while to enjoy the sunshine and meet some of our great customers.

As many of you already know, we have been experimenting with lavender in our products lately. Items like our lavender lemon bars, lavender butter tea biscuits, scones and other items have become very popular. We use local lavender, from Lavender on Old Mission Peninsula. If you would like to try adding the same lavender to anything you make at home, we now offer it in retail packaging in the bakery.

As many of you already know, we have been experimenting with lavender in our products lately. Items like our lavender lemon bars, lavender butter tea biscuits, scones and other items have become very popular. We use local lavender, from Lavender on Old Mission Peninsula. We have a new doughnut fryer!!!
Last Thursday night our doughnut fryer went down. Turns out the supply chain issues most businesses are facing right now did not exclude fryer parts. Everywhere I called told me a 10-12 week lead time, even for a new fryer. Finally found a new fryer in Grand Rapids and was able to do minor fabrication on it to make it fit our specifications. It was a long night but we now have doughnuts again.
For a few days we were unable to fry doughnuts. While I called around the country to find a replacement our employees simply took it upon themselves to get working on alternative baked goods to serve our customers. A huge thank you to them for the tremendous job they did. Some of the items they came up with were no less than fantastic. We will continue to make some of those items.
Also, thank you Joe Malec from Jump Delivery Service in Petoskey. Joe, on a last minute notice, picked up and delivered us the fryer allowing me to stay at the bakery get the area prepped for the new piece of equipment.
And of course, thank you to those that helped with installing, you know who you are.

Rob and Erika purchased this nearly 90 year old business on April 1st. (yes, April Fools’ Day) 2019. To maintain a customer base Rob is not pictured here.

Since the 1930’s The Dutch Oven Bakery has been providing Northern Michigan with the best made from scratch treats, breads and doughnuts. We also serve breakfast and lunch all day.

Gonna be a late night of preparing, but it'll be worth it. Finally a little piece of normalcy coming. Tomorrow is the first Farmer's Market in Charlevoix and Harbor Springs' starts Saturday. See you there!

I overheard a conversation today, a couple complaining about customer service at a place I frequent that I know has great customer service. While it was not my business, the more I thought about it, the more the conversation disturbed me. With that, I feel it necessary to share a thought. Please be patient with small businesses during these times of uncertainty. We are all in uncharted territory. Aside from owners trying to make contingency plans for the unknown, employees are dealing with new stresses. Families need to rearrange their lives (hopefully for only a short period of time). This means child care problems may emerge, leaving businesses short staffed. This virus has dominated conversations and the news. Some people have true concern about their health. Other people have family members that cannot go to work due to shutdowns. I believe I speak for all small businesses in saying that we are going to do our very best to serve our customers and get through this mess. We are also going to do whatever we can to ensure the health of our teams. So please just be patient when you visit a business, the employees there have a lot on their minds as well and I can assure you, they are doing the very best they can. Be kind and stay healthy.
We have been getting our childrens’ birthday cakes from Dutch Oven since my oldest was born! Every year we look forward to sending you an idea of whatever they are into that year and you always do such an amazing job! Thank you!!!!
