LRWA

The LRWA consists of the leading manufacturers of liquid applied waterproofing, approved contractors

he LRWA was originally formed as the BRCMA (Bituminous Roof Coating Manufacturers Association), in the 1970’s in order to promote good practice in the industry. In the early 90’s it became apparent that growth in non-bituminous products was active and the association reinvented itself as ELRA (European Liquid Roofing Association) incorporating all liquid roofing systems. Additionally the organisation was being recognised as an industry voice and thus became involved with the drafting of European standards. In 2005 a second reinvention recognising the wider markets that the liquid waterproofing was being used in, resulted in the formation of ELWA (European Liquid Waterproofing Assocation)

In 2010 the association recognised the need for an industry voice for the fastest growing sector of the roofing market in the UK and refocused once again to include Roofing. The association re-launched to become the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association.

🛠️ COMPETENCE. COMPLIANCE. CONFIDENCE.

Three principles that are becoming increasingly important across our industry - and three principles at the heart of the LRWA’s work to develop a new Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Competence Framework.

In the latest Liquid Applied Membranes Supplement 2026, we take a closer look at the work already underway to establish clear competence pathways across the sector.

With the Building Safety Act placing greater responsibility on individuals and organisations to demonstrate the appropriate skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours (SKEB), proving competence has never been more important.

The LRWA is working with specialist consultants and representatives from member companies to develop a framework covering five core functions - with design and specification identified as the first priority.

The aim? 🎯
To create clearly defined levels of competence, help individuals understand the limits of their role and ultimately give clients greater confidence that projects are being designed and delivered safely, professionally and compliantly.

And this is just the foundation. The longer-term ambition is to develop education, qualifications and career pathways that support a more competent and confident workforce across our sector.

We’re looking for a new Membership & Engagement Manager to help us strengthen relationships across our membership and continue engagement across the LRWA community. 🙌

This is a people-focused role for someone who enjoys building relationships, making connections and getting out into the industry.

You’ll be working closely with our members - particularly contractors and installers - while helping us attract new members, support onboarding and retention, promote LRWA opportunities and increase engagement with our events, training and initiatives. You’ll also represent the LRWA at key industry events and help us build relationships with wider stakeholder groups.

🏠 Work from home / field based
⏰ Maximum commitment equivalent to 2 days per week - 14 hours
🤝 Freelance contractor position

The revised BS 6229:2025 brought important changes for inverted warm roof construction - particularly around the use and installation of Water Flow Reducing Layers (WFRLs).

From WFRL lap dimensions and sealing requirements to blue roof applications, progressive ballasting and the role of the updated LRWA Guidance Note 14, the article gets into the practical detail behind getting specification and installation right.

💡 Why does it matter? Because something as seemingly simple as a WFRL can have a direct impact on thermal performance, water management and the long-term performance of the complete roof system.
