Nearly all of the acts of hatred, abuse, violence and murder directed at Australian Jews over the last several years have been done by those sporting adopted kaffiyehs. That scarf iis, and will remain, a profound signal of the contempt and loathing so many have towards Jews simply on the basis of ethnicity or religion. That Good Food made the decision to promote cultural change for the better by featuring this emblem of violence, especially in the wake of Australia’s worst terrorist attack, in which 15 Jews were slaughtered for precisely this worldview, is bewildering. Astonishingly, after the subsequent outcry they decided not to delete or replace that message, but to simply remove and block commenting. It is the only post in their universe of social media for which commenting is denied. Make of it what you will, but inclusion means everyone. Even Jews. For those who ask ‘why do I take being Jewish so seriously’…..keep this in mind. There are fewer Jews today than there were in 1938. Stolen, murdered, exterminated. That is genocide. And its lasting memory echoes through empty spaces.

I thought this was a bad attempt at comedy. But no, it’s very real. Management at the Swiss Paradies resort informed all guests that the pool would be emptied and disinfected because dirty Jews had swum in it. Simultaneously, the Jewish family were told that they could not have access to their kosher food in the freezer as they were an unacceptable inconvenience. When challenged on the matter, management did as racists so often do, claiming they had been taken out of context. While extreme incidents like this are thankfully relatively rare, the prejudice, hatred and unfounded disgust upon which they are based are everywhere. Including here in Australia. I am Jewish. I am Australian. I expect no special treatment, but nor will I accept fewer rights.
