"Baie dankie vir julle hulp, maar ek gaan nie 'n saak maak nie."

Dit is waarskynlik van die mees ontmoedigende woorde wat 'n patrolleerder kan hoor.

Wanneer 'n verdagte persoon aangemeld word, los vrywillige patrolleerders waarmee hulle besig is om hulp te verleen. Daar word tyd, brandstof en hulpbronne ingespan om die situasie te hanteer en moontlik 'n oortreder vas te trek.

Maar dan kies die slagoffer om nie 'n saak aan te meld nie.

Wat baie mense nie besef nie, is dat misdaadstatistieke slegs gebaseer word op sake wat amptelik by SAPS aangemeld word. Indien misdaad nie aangemeld word nie, bestaan dit eenvoudig nie op papier nie.

📉 Laer syfers op papier kan beteken:
🔸 Minder SAPD-hulpbronne
🔸 Minder wetstoepassing
🔸 Minder ondersteuning vir misdaadvoorkoming
🔸 Minder aandag aan probleemgebiede

'n Geopende saak beteken dat:
✅ 'n Dossier geskep word
✅ Bewyse aangeteken word
✅ Vingerafdrukke en ander inligting vasgelê word
✅ Verdagtes met toekomstige misdaad verbind kan word
✅ Die regstelsel die geleentheid kry om op te tree

D**k vir 'n oomblik hieraan:

Vandag word 'n verdagte in 'n erf betrap. Geen saak word gemaak nie en hy word net gewaarsku.
Volgende week breek dieselfde persoon by iemand anders in.
Omdat daar geen vorige saak was nie, is daar geen rekord, geen geskiedenis en geen spoor wat ondersoekers kan opvolg nie.
Ons verstaan dat dit nie altyd maklik of gerieflik is om by die polisiestasie 'n saak aan te meld nie.
Maar wanneer jy misdaad aanmeld, doen jy dit nie net vir jouself nie.

In times of uncertainty, information spreads quickly. Unfortunately, so does misinformation.

Sharing unverified information on social media can create unnecessary fear, confusion, and panic within our community. A single message, photograph, or voice note shared without checking the facts can trigger a frenzy that is difficult to contain.

Before you hit "share", ask yourself:

✅ Has this information been verified by a reliable source?
✅ Is it recent, or is it an old incident being reshared?
✅ Does it contain factual information rather than rumours or assumptions?
✅ Could sharing this post cause unnecessary alarm or harm to innocent people?
✅ Have the relevant authorities or neighbourhood watch structures confirmed the information?

False information can:
🔸 Spread fear and anxiety.
🔸 Damage reputations.
🔸 Hinder investigations.
🔸 Divert valuable resources.

❓ WHY DO WE BLOCK OUT THE FACES OF ALLEGED SUSPECTS?

We are often asked why the faces of individuals who have been arrested are blurred or obscured before photographs are shared.

The answer is simple: The law does not allow us to publish these images.

In South Africa, there are both legal and ethical considerations that must be respected.

🔸 An arrested person remains an alleged suspect until proven guilty in a court of law.

🔸 Section 69 of the South African Police Service Act prohibits the publication of photographs or sketches of certain persons in custody without the required permission.

🔸 This protection also extends to individuals who may become witnesses in criminal proceedings.

🔸 Publishing images prematurely can compromise important investigative procedures, including identification parades, which may negatively affect the outcome of a case.

🔸 In some instances, the circulation of these images can prejudice court proceedings and potentially work in favour of the accused rather than the victim. SAPS has repeatedly cautioned the public against sharing photographs of alleged suspects on social media before they have appeared in court.

For this reason, we will continue to blur or block out the faces of alleged suspects when sharing information on our platforms.

Our goal is not only to keep our community informed, but also to ensure that justice is not compromised.

Protect the process. Protect the integrity of investigations. Protect the rights of everyone involved.

THE THINGS WE DO THAT INVITE THE BAD IN

Community safety starts at home. Sometimes, without realising it, our everyday habits can create opportunities for criminal activity or attract unwanted attention to our neighbourhood.

Ask yourself:

🍞 Am I disposing of food waste in a way that encourages scavenging?

🔪 Am I disposing of broken knives, gardening equipment responsibly?

🚪 Do I leave gates, garage doors, or access points open longer than necessary?

📦 Am I putting boxes from expensive purchases out for everyone to see?

🔑 Have I hidden spare keys in obvious places?

🌳 Are overgrown trees and shrubs creating places where people can hide unnoticed?

🚗 Do I leave valuables visible inside my vehicle?

📱 Am I advertising on social media that my home is unoccupied?

These may seem like small things, but together they can have a big impact on the safety and security of our community.

Let's all do our part by making choices that protect our homes, our neighbours, and our neighbourhood.

Prevention is everyone's responsibility.
