Birds are amazing.
We have a bird feeder at home. Its one of those bottles that we fill with sugary water and hang up on the roof of the deck. The birds love it. Sugar birds, sunbirds, glass eyes, starlings and many others jostle for a go at the precious liquid. Of course size counts. But there is a fascinating politic going on as somehow everyone gets a turn. Sometimes brief and skittish, sometimes relaxed and assured. Sometimes a gang arrives and simply takes over while those lower in the pecking order sit in the tree and indignantly squawk or shriek or shout. Or just wait their turn, because it will some. What is also spellbinding is the speed with which they take off, navigate the complex web of branches and effortlessly land without so much as touching a twig.
And they fly with such intention. As if something really important awaits them. Life seems such a serious business.
A duck gliding along on a calm pond is a serene sight, seemingly effortlessly able to move as if powered by an underwater propellor. The truth of course is quite different, as it paddles away underwater heading towards its intended destination....whatever that may be.
Their paddling is a metaphor for hard work made to look easy.
We try to give the same impression when it's busy here at Lime Tree Cafe.
But behind the scenes the kitchen is always paddling away. And as if making the food isn't enough, every two weeks they have to come up with a new Specials Menu. Thursday is the tasting day when we offer our new creations to the waiters to test and get to know. I know I have written about this before, but it is amazing what they produce....so I am writing again to salute their efforts.
