Remembering Rose on the anniversary of the service celebrating her life, which I had the honor of officiating at Westlawn Cemetery.

Rose was the beloved mother and mother-in-law of my friends Barb and Stuart. During the service, I shared a contemporary version of the traditional Jewish Woman of Valor tribute—a reading that described Rose perfectly. She was loving, intelligent, resourceful, independent, and fun-loving, with a zest for life that inspired everyone who knew her.

After the death of Edward, her husband of more than 45 years, Rose demonstrated that remarkable resourcefulness in a very modern way. She reconnected online with Marty, an old boyfriend, and the two married, sharing happy years together until his passing. For a woman of her generation, that was quite an accomplishment and a testament to her adventurous spirit.

May the memories of Rose continue to live in the hearts of her family and friends—bringing comfort in difficult moments, smiles when her stories are recalled, and inspiration to live with the same warmth, resilience, and love that she shared so generously throughout her life.

Happy Anniversary to Jason and Cody!

I had the honor of officiating their intimate outdoor wedding at the iconic Buckingham Fountain in downtown Chicago. They traveled from Indiana to be married at a time when same-s*x marriage was not yet recognized in every state—a testament to their love, commitment, and determination to build a life together.

The day was made even more special because it was also Jason's birthday. What better way to celebrate than by marrying the person you love? As if that weren't enough, Jason and Cody surprised me with a dozen roses, a thoughtful gesture I have never forgotten.

Jason and Cody, your wedding remains one of the memorable ceremonies I have had the privilege to officiate. Wishing you both a very happy anniversary and many more years filled with love, laughter,

Happy Anniversary to Marilynn and Erick! I had the honor of officiating their elegant wedding at Wilder Mansion in Elmhurst—my very first wedding as an officiant. Because of that, Marilynn and Erick will always hold a special place in my heart.

Their beautiful ceremony was filled with love, family, and meaningful traditions. The live music for the processional and recessional set a wonderful tone for the day. Marilynn's cousin, Marlene, read "Cherish Every Moment" by Leslie Neilson, while Erick's sister, Katherine, shared the timeless passage "Love Is Patient" from the Book of Corinthians.

After Marilynn and Erick exchanged their vows, I recited the Blessing of the Hands. Because they were joining not only their lives but also their families, they exchanged special vows with their four children. The ceremony concluded with all six family members participating in a sand unity ritual, symbolizing the blending of their lives into one loving family.

Marilynn and Erick, thank you for allowing me to be part of such a memorable day. Wishing you a very happy anniversary and many more years filled with love, laughter, good health, and cherished moments together.

Today I remember Bruce on the anniversary of the service celebrating his life that I had the privilege of officiating. Following the service, I also dedicated the gravestones for both Bruce and his beloved wife, Bonnie, whose memorial service I had conducted seven years earlier.

Their daughter Wendy's thank-you note deeply touched my heart and remains one I will never forget:
"Thank you so much for bringing the story of my parents' lives to life—in their deaths. I truly value the work that you do. You fell from the sky like an angel when I needed you—and have always been no more than an arm's reach away since."

Her words remind me why I do this work. Being a celebrant is deeply meaningful, and it is a true privilege to help families honor the people they love, tell the stories of lives well lived, and preserve memories that continue to bring comfort, inspiration, and connection for generations to come.

May the memories of Bruce and Bonnie continue to live in the hearts of their family, bringing comfort in difficult moments, smiles in happy ones, and inspiration to live lives that honor their legacy.

We also shared the inspirational piece A Man Is a Success. Together, these readings reflected the values that guided Jim's life and the legacy he left behind.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate a life rich in love, learning, laughter, and meaningful connections. Although Jim is no longer physically present, his spirit lives on in the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the kindness he shared so generously.

May Jim's memory continue to be a blessing to all who knew and loved him—bringing comfort, evoking cherished memories, and inspiring others to live with the same authenticity, compassion, curiosity, and joy that so beautifully defined his life.

Remembering Seid on the anniversary of the graveside service celebrating his life, which I had the privilege of officiating.

Seid was a remarkable man whose strength was evident both physically and mentally. I opened the service with the poem Passing On and reflected on his adventurous journey from Yugoslavia to America in 1965. His son, Dean, shared a heartfelt tribute that beautifully captured the love and admiration his family felt for him.

To honor Seid's memory, I read the poems God Looked Around His Garden and Now Your Home Is Far Away. We concluded with readings from Psalms 90 and 23, followed by a prayer offered by Dean. In a touching final act of farewell, three red roses were placed on his grave, and family and friends each took part in filling the grave with earth.

As the years pass, may Seid's memory continue to bring comfort to those who loved him, smiles as they recall cherished moments, and inspiration to live their lives in ways that honor the strength, courage, and love he shared with others.

Today I remember Joey, beloved husband of Beth, on the anniversary of the memorial service I had the privilege of officiating at All Saints Cemetery.

Family and friends gathered to honor Joey's life and the love he shared with those around him. His cousin, also named Joe, offered heartfelt memories that painted a beautiful picture of the man Joey was and the impact he had on so many lives. Beth asked me to read the poems A Legacy of Love and I'm Free, whose words brought comfort, reflection, and hope to all who were present.

At the conclusion of the service, we released balloons into the sky, sending our prayers, messages of love, and cherished memories to Joey. It was a symbolic moment of releasing some of our grief while continuing the journey of healing and remembrance.

Though years have passed, Joey's legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends. May his memory continue to bring comfort during difficult times, smiles when treasured moments are recalled, and inspiration to live in ways that honor the love, kindness, and spirit he shared with the world.

Remembering John on the anniversary of the memorial service I had the honor of officiating at his home in Chicago. I first met John and many of his friends when I officiated at the funeral of another dear friend in their circle.

During the service, Jean beautifully recited The Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, and we invited everyone present to share their memories of John. Those heartfelt reflections created a deeply moving tribute to a life so well loved. The service concluded with The Lord’s Prayer.

John, may the memories of your life continue to live in the hearts of all who knew and loved you — bringing comfort in moments of sadness, smiles in moments of remembrance, and inspiration to live with greater kindness and compassion. Rest in peace.

Happy anniversary to Chelsea and Ryan, whose elegant wedding I officiated at Stan Mansion in Chicago. Having been together since their teenage years, their heartfelt personal vows beautifully reflected the depth of their love and connection.

To begin the ceremony and affirm the unity of everyone present, we shared in the Sign of Peace. I also read an excerpt from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernières, which perfectly captured their feelings for one another. Before exchanging vows, they participated in a handfasting ritual — the tradition from which the phrase “tying the knot” originates. Following the ring exchange, the ceremony concluded with Carl Sandburg’s poem “I Love You.”

Chelsea and Ryan, wishing you many more years filled with love, laughter, joyous adventures, wonderful experiences, and good health together!

Happy anniversary to Xochitl and Javier, whose intimate outdoor wedding I officiated in the backyard of their Wheeling home. Their heartfelt ceremony included a reading from Corinthians, a quiet moment to look out at their gathered family and friends, and a beautiful Passing of the Peace ritual shared by all.

After exchanging vows, I read the Blessing of the Hands, followed by special promises they made to their daughter Natalia, who proudly served as ring bearer. Before the ring exchange, family members warmed and blessed the rings, symbolizing the love and support of everyone present.

Wishing Xochitl and Javier many more years of love, laughter, joyous adventures, wonderful experiences, and good health together!
