My favorite fun fact is that I went to high school in Sedona, Arizona. When I was 14, determined to go to high school abroad (maybe strongly influenced by High School Musical), I sat for the Singapore Government High School Scholarship exam, applied to boarding schools in the UK and US, and landed myself at Verde Valley School. It was a shock for a girl growing up in a busy city of a cool 3M people to wake up everyday to the red rocks, but I loved every single minute of it.

We stayed in my old (possibly haunted) dorm room, went down to the Creek for a swim, climbed Cathedral Rocks early morning and felt the energy vortex, and did so many things I wasn’t allowed to do on campus back then (drinking on the Dining Hall rooftop would have gotten me so many hours of cleaning up horse manure).

It was also the perfect time to get out of DC and go introduce my spouse to a few people that basically “adopted” me when I was just an angsty teenager, who showed me so much interest, love, and patience. Going back and seeing all the Field Trips and Projects and Classes that the students here get to take gives me hope. I don’t have any Sedona recs for you - lucky for me Dining Hall food was delish all week, but if you ever need to unplug from it all and find a bit of hope, going back to where you were happiest works really well.

A Work-In-Progress that Im super proud of from last Sunday: our dairy-free Cinnamon & Orange Blossom HONEYBUN! It’s made with our sourdough challah dough with good olive oil, Saigon cinnamon sprinkled throughout (def more cinnamon is better), shaped, proofed, fried, and glazed with a cinnamon orange blossom frosting with orange zest.

Why is it a WIP, you ask? I have always wanted to add dairy-free pastries to our menu, and having been mesmerized by ’s excellent honeybuns. I just couldnt decide how to shape ours - a spiral like cinnamon roll, a twist like our (delicious) Coffee Cinnamon Bun, or a knot like our Garlic & Wild Ramp Bun? Im always scared to shape two different menu items the exact same way - what if our packing team can’t tell them apart 🤣🤣🤣

These honeybuns will stay in the weekend menu for a bit - they are super fluffy and light and just a touch sweet. By next week we will have all the shaping and portioning and the right amount of cinnamon figured out, and then they will be PERFECT!

Just blink and it’s June. I love early summer when the Sun is out and the mosquito is not. I found fresh apricots AND the pinkest rhubarb this week. I was able to leave the bakery to go to while the team finished the bake and did pick-up. They even took Pastry Case photos 😭 are true heroes 🥹

Rainy week has gotten me all the feelings, but nothing beats seeing the line down the block yesterday at Pastries Pick-up. Thank you to everyone for your support, for your joy, and for being so respectful of our neighbors and this little street. And the team brought their A+ game as always - Reese, Ciara, Priya who landed back from Norway at 6am and then showed up at 11am with Scandinavian snacks, and Sarina who did a back to back wedding delivery and then came in to help the Front of House team. Every week I said the next would be more chill and every week the bake got bigger and my brain just couldnt stop thinking of new ideas.

I love planning for a STACKED and HOT 🥵 bake day only to be surprised by how on it the team is. As we push the limit of my kitchen, it’s never lost on me that good people is the most precious part of my work, and if we are not all happy, inspired, and creative, what is really the point??? Today we finished early, had tacos from for Family Meal (the catfish is my favorite), and listened to Pitbull nonstop. I can it a win to be able to send folks home early, and still find myself awake with plenty of energy after work.
