Ah yes the joy of content creation as a small business owner 🥲

Influencer culture is largely changing the food service industry.

More and more we are seeing people ask for discounts or free items in exchange for posts on their Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc.

The truth is, unless you are specifically a bridal influencer or a food photographer, you posting a wedding cake that I make on your Instagram story - or even your main feed - is not going to necessarily guarantee me any future business.

what does guarantee me future business is continuing to have consistent pricing without favoritism. I pride myself on being fairly priced for the products that I offer.

I’m always thrilled to see that somebody has a significant following, but I also know that just because you have a large following, doesn’t mean that you have a large following of people who care about Cake content. My followers are not what pays my bills. Money from your Cake does.

My biggest compliment was when my regulars stopped tagging me in Facebook posts where people said “I need a cake but I don’t want to pay an arm and a leg” or “I want this four tier wedding cake but I want it at a ‘reasonable price’” — and here’s why 👇🏼

I’m not cheap. I know this. My clients know this. But at my shop we bake entirely from scratch with high quality ingredients. 82% European butter isn’t cheap. Fresh fruit isn’t cheap. Choosing to ganache all of our stacked cakes isn’t cheap. But it tastes wayyyy better than using a high ratio soy shortening or buying a premade jam, so we do it.

And honestly, we are proud to.

There’s absolutely NOTHING WRONG with having a budget. But I’m also okay with being out of someone’s budget.

Luxury products come with a luxury price tag.

If you’re working your little b***y off, you’re probably doing it right! 😮‍💨

It’s exceptionally hard to be a small business owner. You’re going to work more than you’d like to during hours when everybody else is out socializing with friends.

Being able to hire employees as a luxury. Be grateful when you can, but anticipate that that might not be for a little while.

Then, when you do hire them, make sure that you treat them like the luxury that they are.

❤️❤️

Sammy- how did you transport this??

…. Positive vibes and prayers, obviously.

The only person preventing you from pursuing your dream now is you.

You can start small. Don’t quit your day job day 1. Build your skills. Learn your craft. Build your book of business. And then, when you know you need to dedicate 100% of your focus in order to reach the next level, take your leap.

When I first spoke to my husband about quitting my full-time job and going all in on my own business, there were many moments when I had a lot of fear. When the week finally came and I knew it was going to be my last week at my full-time job, I turned to him and I said, “What if I fail?”

But ever the loving husband, and always my biggest encourager, he simply shrugged, smiled at me, and said, “Well, don’t fail.”

He never had any doubt I could succeed, and I’m grateful for his love and encouragement everyday.

Half the battle of business ownership is the mental piece. And having an incredible support system in my home and my family has made all the difference. I love you all and thank God for you everyday 🤍

3 questions you should be asking your wedding cake artist 🎂

1) what are your most popular flavors?

So many of my clients assumed that they should either do plain vanilla on vanilla or chocolate or marble. There’s nothing inherently wrong with any of these flavors, however, most of the time when I discuss these flavors with clients, they’re not super jazzed about them.

They are simply picking these flavors because they feel that this is what will appease the most people.

Let me be the first one to tell you that people are done with predictable wedding cake flavors. My rule for my clients is: if you love it, they will love it.

2) what is the last day that I can make changes to my proposal?

Going to be different for every cake artist. For me personally, it’s 30 days out from your event date. For other Cake artists did several months out! This is important for you to know just in case you have people that end up not RSVP-ing who you thought would RSVP or vice versa

3) can I see a proposal with written out pricing for everything?

Any kick or does she be able to tell you pretty immediately what everything is going to cost you. They should be able to list your Cake price, delivery, price, and any additional desserts that you’re looking for.

do not be afraid to ask for this! A lot of people are really afraid to ask for pricing, but it’s a natural part of the process and it’s something that you need to know.
