Hi friends!
I’ve had quite a few new faces find their way over here lately, so I thought it was time to introduce myself again and share a little bit about the baker behind First Light Baking Company.
I’m Lauren! I’m a stay-at-home mom, wife, and baker. Baking has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest memories are in the kitchen baking alongside my grandmother. I’ve always loved the comfort, creativity, and connection that comes from making something from scratch.
But my real sourdough journey began when my son was born. He was a baby who had absolutely no interest in sleeping through the night, and somewhere in the middle of those long, exhausting nights, when I saw the first light of day more often than I didn’t, I started making sourdough.
What began as something to keep my hands busy slowly became something I completely fell in love with.
Then, about two years ago, my life changed in a much bigger way when I was diagnosed with a debilitating autoimmune disease affecting my muscles and connective tissue.
That season sent me down a path I never expected to take in order to heal my body. I started asking more questions about what we were putting into our bodies, not just what was on the ingredient label, but where our food came from, how it was grown, and the people and practices behind it.
The more I learned, the more passionate I became about simple, thoughtfully made food and supporting the people who grow it (support our local farmers!) I started milling my own flour, learning more about the ingredients I used, and sharing loaves with family and neighbors.
And eventually, that passion became this bakery.
What started as a tired new mom making sourdough has grown into my full-time work. I’m incredibly grateful that I get to stay home with my son, have my family be part of this business every day, use baking as a creative outlet, partner with other local businesses, work with ingredients I truly believe in, and share what I make with our community.
So, if you’re new here, welcome! I’m so glad you’re here.
And to everyone who has been around from the beginning: thank you. Thank you for every order, every share, every kind word, and every bit of support you’ve given this little bakery.
I’m so grateful I get to do something I truly love.
