Bridge Bread

Bridge Bread HOPE IN THE BAKING! A social enterprise bakery that provides restorative employment for people without safe and stable housing

Bridge Bread is a unique and successful social enterprise built on 3 key factors:

1) 75¢ out of every dollar generated from the sales of Bridge Bread goes to workers' compensation.

2) Because bread is a consumable, customers keep coming back week after week to buy more bread.

3) Bread Baking is a valuable trade skill that provides a sustainable source of income for homeless and out-of-work

individuals. The poor and homeless will always be with us. However, collectively we have the power to make a difference and lessen the severity of homelessness. Helping a homeless and out-of-work person find a way to return to leading a productive life and gain a sense of dignity in the process is right and just. We are our brother’s keeper and lending a hand to the least and the lost is the responsibility of us all. Together we can make a difference one life at a time. We invite you to contact Fred Domke at [email protected] to learn more about Bridge Bread and how your church or on-profit organization can begin to make a difference in the lives of those seeking an opportunity to learn a meaningful job skill and a pathway to a better life. Bridge Bread Bakery is a Missouri nonprofit corporation with federal 501(c)(3) status.

We need your help! We are looking for donations of wine and gift cards for our Gala this year. Do you have some gift cards in your drawer you aren't using? How about a bottle of wine or two in your wine chiller that you may not love, but know someone will adore? We want them for our Wine and Gift Card Pull during our cocktail hour! Please respond, DM, or email [email protected]. Together we can help bake away homelessness!

Our keynote speaker for October 2 is Marie Kenyon, JD of the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Marie has had a lengthy career advancing the social justice mission of the Catholic Church. She is currently the director of the Office of Peace and Justice and founder of the inaugural Peace and Justice Commission of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis.

Bridge Bread exists because of a fairly simple observation. People who are unhoused get told what they need far more often than they get offered a job. Fifteen years ago, we decided to offer the job instead.

Marie has spent her career focusing on the same passion, and we are glad she is bringing it to our room.

RSVPs close soon!

Four years ago I started this journey with Bridge Bread. Just like any position there have been ups and downs, uncertainty, and joy, failures and successes. But I wouldn’t trade any of it for something else. Fred and Sharon have been wonderful mentors to me, as have Jessica and the board. I’m proud and honored that they put their trust in me to drive Bridge Bread into the future. I’m hopeful that our customers and donors continue to find it in their hearts to help our program employees find stability and a path towards economic mobility. Together we can help bake away homelessness.

This is a set of keys to an apartment.

It took a job to get them. Not a referral, not a waiting list, not a case plan. A job, at a bakery, with hours on a schedule and a wage that a landlord will accept as income.

That is the whole Bridge Bread model in one photograph. We hire people who are unhoused, we pay them a living wage to make bread that people buy because it is good, and we walk alongside them for the paperwork and the hard weeks. Then, this happens.

15 years of it. More than 92,000 hours of paid work.

On October 2 we are celebrating that at the Royal Sonesta Chase Park Plaza. Ticket sales close soon!

Do not call your travel agent.

Here is what is going under the hammer on October 2.

A South African photo safari. The Amalfi Coast, with a day on Capri. Ireland, from the Cliffs of Moher to the Giant's Causeway. Cortona in Tuscany, and that one sleeps four. Costa Rica. Portugal. Key West. The Greek Islands.

Every one of them is four-star, includes three full years to travel with no blackout dates, and comes with a travel specialist who books the whole thing for you.

We will go through them one at a time over the next few weeks. For now: you have to be in the room to bid, and RSVPs close September 2.

This is what the night actually looks like.

Last year's gala raised more than we dared to hope for, and it did not feel like a fundraiser. It felt like a room full of people who genuinely like each other, eating well and doing something useful.

October 2nd: same room, better bread, 15years to celebrate.

In 2011, Fred and Sharon Domke founded Bridge Bread after Fred had a dream about baking bread with people who are homeless.

So they started a bakery.

Not a soup kitchen. Not a training program. A bakery, where people show up, do skilled work, and get paid for it.

Now in its 15th year, Bridge Bread has a commercial bakery and two stores, a lot of very good bread, and a long list of people whose lives went a different direction because someone handed them an apron.

Fred will be telling the whole story at our 15th Anniversary Gala on October 2. Come hear it: onecau.se/bridgebread2026gala

Meet Mick.

Mick came to Bridge Bread without stable housing. Today he is a professional artisan baker. Since Mick joined Bridge Bread 11 months ago, he's spent more than 1,800 hours in the bakery.

This is what 15 years of Bridge Bread looks like in one person.

Come celebrate with us on October 2nd and hear from Mick himself about his journey with Bridge Bread: onecau.se/bridgebread2026gala
