Pomegranates have always had a special place in Persian culture, symbolizing life, abundance, and love.
My Bibi Joon believed they were a heavenly fruit and that not even one seed should go to waste.
And my mom is a master of masghati.
If you’ve never had it, imagine a marriage between gummy bears and Turkish delight: chewy, soft, and delicate.
Last year I made this pomegranate masghati alongside mom, using fresh pomegranates from our farm.
I’ve since updated the recipe and answered many of your questions.
I hope you enjoy the recipe and share it with your baker friends. .

There’s something so beautiful about saj bread and the way it cooks over the hot curved surface of a saj. Today I’m making Talami, a sweet saj bread from Anissa Helou’s beautiful book Lebanon.
The dough is enriched with butter and milk and flavored with anise and mahaleb. This was my first time using mahaleb, and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I loved the subtle nutty flavor it added to the bread. I’ve admired Anissa’s work for so many years, especially the love she shared for her mom. It always reminded me of my own relationship with my mom and made her work feel even more special to me. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I did.

Cake Asrooneh is a category of simple cakes in Iran, traditionally enjoyed in the afternoon. Asr means afternoon, and these are the kind of everyday cakes made to be enjoyed with a freshly brewed cup of Persian tea. 🫖🍰

For this Cake Asrooneh, I made a Blueberry Almond Cake with olive oil and Stevia—a lighter, cholesterol-friendly version that is still moist and satisfying.

Perfect for asr, with a cup of tea. 🤍

A little piece of my conversation with Tirgan about culture—what it means to me, how it connects us to our roots, and how it lives on through generations. ❤️

During the Safavid period, animal motifs were widely used in Iranian art—deer, birds, water, and other elements from nature. During the Qajar period, motifs such as Esleimi arabesques, the Joqeh, flowers, and calligraphy became prominent.
The story behind the “Kermani Eye” goes back to the time of Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar. The people of Kerman rebelled and supported Karim Khan Zand. They brought him into Kerman, to Arg-e Bam, where they supported him.
Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar remained behind the gates and moats for several days. Eventually, some people betrayed the city and opened the gates. He entered and captured Zand.
Afterward, thousands of people had their eyes gouged out. As people witnessed what had happened, they gathered together to recite elegies and mourn. There are poems associated with this story, which I will read for you.
This element is called the “eyebrow.” The eye is placed beneath the eyebrow to make the composition more beautiful, while also giving it a sense of a crown, strength, endurance, stability, and centrality.
In these vessels, the eye motif is used as a symbol of light, hope, endurance, positive energy, abundance, prosperity, and joy. This is why the kohl-eye motif is placed on this side of the vessel.

In Iranian culture, whenever something good happens — whether small or life-changing — we say:

“Dahaneton ro shirin konid.”
Make your mouth sweet.

And we bring out shirini, sweets in Persian.

Because sweetness is how we celebrate.
Sweetness is how we mark a new beginning.
Sweetness is how we bless what comes next.

Today, I feel that same energy.

A gentle hope, growing in our hearts — like wheat slowly germinating for samanu.

So wherever you are, I send you sweetness.

May what is growing be full of light 🕊️🍃🤍

The new year has begun in a way none of us could have imagined—unbelievably painful.
We are mourning the loss of more than 12,000 of Iran’s children.
Like many of you, I am living in shock, anger, and grief.

In the middle of this heartbreak, I want to pause and thank this community—Iranians and non-Iranians alike. Your messages, your solidarity, your willingness to listen, share, and stand with us have meant more than I can ever put into words.

We know the path to freedom is not easy,
but we carry a dream of a free Iran—
and that dream is what carries us forward.
