As wildfire smoke continues to impact our area, one of the easiest ways to improve the air inside your home is with a simple DIY air filter.

If you have a 20-inch box fan, attach a MERV 13 furnace filter to the back (the intake side) of the fan using duct tape, making sure the airflow arrow on the filter points toward the fan. Run the fan on low or medium speed in a room with the windows and doors closed. This can significantly reduce fine smoke particles indoors.

If you don't have a furnace filter, hanging or placing damp towels on the fan (remember still needs air flow so not to over work your fan) can help trap some larger airborne particles. While this is not nearly as effective as a MERV 13 filter or a HEPA air purifier, it may provide limited benefit until a better solution is available.

Additional tips:
• Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.
• Replace the furnace filter when it becomes visibly dirty.
• If you have central heating or air conditioning, use a high-quality filter and set the fan to circulate if appropriate for your system.
• If possible, spend time in a designated clean-air room.
• Individuals with asthma, COPD, heart disease, older adults, pregnant women, and young children should limit smoke exposure as much as possible.

Stay safe, monitor local air quality conditions, and wear a properly fitted N95 respirator if you must spend extended time outdoors in heavy smoke.
