A vacation goes off the rails, but pie saves the day. Plus other fun tidbits.

I was required to calculate my PIEOWA audience numbers for my film grant final report. (TBH, I probably would have procrastinated on this if not for the deadline.) Apparently the numbers are quite good for a humble little indie documentary like mine. But then, like I wrote in the prologue of my “Making Piece” memoir, “I blame pie.” 😉 I love pie. Seems that audiences do too. One of my favorite comments after a screening was from a college kid who told me, “I didn’t think pie could hold my interest for over an hour, but it did.” Thanks to all of you who have made your way through rain, snow, heatwaves, cold snaps, and even tornado warnings to come see my film. And the road show continues with more screenings getting added in more states. Check Pieowa.com for the schedule.

I saw Max from Team Pie Hunter on RAGBRAI last week. I knew he was representing pie but didn’t realize he was also raising awareness for the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge. 🦬 Max appreciate ears in my PIEOWA documentary. You wouldn’t recognize him now though as he’s a few years older, grown several inches taller, and is remarkably slimmer. What a nice young man. I can’t wait to see where he goes in life. 🥧🚴🏻‍♂️

The refuge is being represented on Ragbrai (the annual massive bike ride across the state of Iowa) by Max Kimball of Team Pie Hunter. If you are out there biking across Iowa this week watch for Max and others who might be wearing one of the jerseys designed for Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge. Thanks for the photo,Max. Have a great ride! (To make this story even better,Max is biking with his dad and his grandmother, who is only 80 years old.)

Stopped in the RAYGUNshirts in Ames to find something to wear for the Marshalltown showing of today. And there it was, the inspiration for my film title! Purchase made! ✅ (Though I have to note that I really wanted the ringer version worn by the store clerk. I even begged her to buy it off her back because it’s out of stock, but had to settle for the gray one.) Come see PIEOWA today at the Plaza Theatres, 3:30 and 6:30 PM.

I’ve been bunking with Team NPR (No Pie Refused) along the RAGBRAI route. They have been so generous letting me stay with them at their hosts’ homes that I wanted to do something to thank them. What better way than bringing them pie? But not just any pie. I asked Iowa State Fair champion pie baker Marcia Miller who appears in PIEOWA if she would make a few pies for them. Marcia would normally be riding on RAGBRAI herself but couldn’t make it this year and said that making the pies made her feel like she could be part of it. To say Team NPR appreciated the pie is an understatement. I kept hearing enthusiastic comments like “This raspberry pie is killer!” and “You have to try the chocolate pecan one!” They joked that their team could be called No Pie Left Behind as there was not a crumb left. I never get tired of seeing how happy pie makes people. Gratitude all around.
Tomorrow is my last day on the route. I’ll be heading back to Camp Dough after my PIEOWA showings in Marshalltown. Come see it at the Plaza Theatres—3:30 and 6:30 PM.
