MEET THE FAMILY BEHIND HOMICIDAL CAKES
You’ve met the cookies. You’ve met the cakes. You’ve probably seen a little bit of our weird, spooky, slightly unhinged sense of humor.
But you haven’t really met the family behind Homicidal Cakes.
So, let’s fix that. ❤️
Hi! I’m Schey Ramirez, the Executive Pastry Chef behind Homicidal Cakes.
I’m a retired disabled Navy veteran, a mom, a wife, a lifelong lover of baking, and someone who apparently decided that going back to college as an adult while serving in the military, working full-time, and raising a child was a perfectly reasonable idea. 😂
My love of baking started long before culinary school.
Some of my favorite childhood memories are growing up in the kitchen with my grandma and my sister, baking cookies and fighting over who got to lick the beaters or the spoon.
Those little moments stayed with me.
And so did the people who supported me along the way.
Both of my grandpas meant the absolute world to me. They stepped into the father role in my life and made sure I always felt loved, supported, and cared for.
Whether it was marching band, sports, joining the Navy, or anything else I decided to pursue, they were there. Every step of the way.
I know they still are.
When I realized my Navy career wasn’t going to continue the way I had planned, I hit a pretty big brick wall.
I suddenly had to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up.
After some long conversations with someone very close and dear to me, they told me they thought I had really missed my mark by never going to school for my love of baking.
That thought stuck.
So while I was still active duty and doing what we called “hurry up and wait” on my retirement paperwork, I decided to take the leap.
I enrolled at Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts and pursued my Associate Degree in Baking & Pastry Arts.
And let me tell you…
It was HARD.
Going to college later in life is hard enough. Add active duty, working full-time, being a single mom, and trying to maintain some semblance of sanity, and you have yourself one hell of a recipe. 😂
But I did it.
And then I met Max.
Max is the foundation of this business.
I may be the one creating the desserts, coming up with the ideas, making the lists, and then making lists for my lists… 😂
But Max is the one behind the scenes making sure the wheels actually stay on.
He runs the numbers.
He helps package orders.
He preps for markets.
He helps write menus.
He listens to my crazy ideas.
And, most importantly, he is the calm, cool, collected backbone to my… well… extreme temper and tendency to fly off the handle. 😂
I’m the creative one.
He’s the voice of reason.
And approximately 90% of our business conversations probably sound something like:
Me: “We need this.”
Max: “Nah, we’ll be alright.”
Me: “No, we REALLY need this.”
Later…
Me: “See?! I told you we needed it!”
😂😂😂
And then there’s the other side of Max’s contribution to the business:
Eating my cookies.
When I first started the cottage bakery out of our home, I literally had to chase him out of the kitchen with a wooden spoon because he wanted to taste EVERYTHING.
I tell him all the time he’s going to end up like Homer Simpson when Marge made the brownies and he couldn’t wait to try one. 😂
His favorite treats are my gourmet cookies, with his top three flavors being Red Velvet, Peanut Butter, and Snickerdoodle.
And he is absolutely obsessed with homemade whipped cream.
So if you ever wonder who helped us perfect our cookies…
It was probably Max.
Or at least that’s what he tells me while eating them. 😂
Then there’s Aaron, our resident chocolate chip cookie taste tester.
Aaron gets dragged along to pretty much everything, but he’s actually more than happy to help — as long as helping doesn’t involve cleaning or taking out the trash. 😂
His favorite is the OG:
The Chocolate Chip Cookie.
He doesn’t even really understand why the business is called Homicidal Cakes.
He just thinks the name is cool.
And honestly?
Fair enough. 😂
And then there’s our newest little member of the family, Madison. ❤️
She’s still just a baby, so her current job description is pretty simple:
Be adorable.
And she’s already absolutely crushing it.
Because what better advertising could we possibly have than an incredibly cute newborn wearing a Homicidal Cakes onesie? 😂
Now, you might be wondering…
Where did the name Homicidal Cakes come from?
That one was all Max.
We both love all things spooky, haunted, and just a little dark. We have a pretty dark sense of humor, Halloween is our favorite holiday, and if there’s a haunted house involved, we’re probably going.
Max came up with Homicidal Cakes, we looked at each other, and basically went…
“Yep. That’s it.”
And somehow, it stuck. 😂
Our favorite haunted house we’ve visited so far is The Slaughterhouse in Des Moines, Iowa, and if you’ve ever been, you already understand where some of our inspiration comes from. 😂
At home, Halloween is an entirely different story.
I go absolutely INSANE with the decorations.
Max’s job is moral support, muscle, and occasionally reminding me that we probably don’t need another decoration.
He’s usually wrong.
😂
But Homicidal Cakes isn’t just about spooky names and fun decorations.
It’s about quality.
My motto in life — and especially in this business — is:
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.
I’ve worked in private bakeries and grocery store bakeries, and I learned very quickly that the environment wasn’t right for me.
The focus was often on how quickly something could be produced, how much money could be made per hour, and how many products could get out the door.
But that’s not how I want to bake.
That’s not something I can uphold.
And it’s certainly not what I believe in as a Navy veteran.
I want to take the time to do things right.
That’s one of the reasons I decided to start Homicidal Cakes.
Because I needed to create something that worked with my life and my disabilities rather than constantly fighting against them.
I needed a business where I could focus on quality, creativity, and the customer.
And that brings me to my absolute favorite part of what I do.
The challenge.
Give me your inspiration pictures.
Give me a collection of ideas.
Show me the crazy cake you’ve been dreaming about.
And ask me:
“Can you do this?”
My answer is almost always going to be:
“Challenge accepted.” 😈
There is nothing I love more than taking an idea someone has in their head and figuring out how to bring it to life in cake.
Some of my favorite creations have been the heavily themed custom cakes — especially when they involve custom cake toppers, edible images, or some completely ridiculous idea that makes me stop and think, “Okay… how the hell are we going to pull THIS off?” 😂
Opera cakes.
Baked Alaskas.
Soufflés.
Highly detailed custom cakes.
French macarons.
Give me the challenge.
I’ll figure it out.
And sometimes I’ll surprise even myself.
Because there have definitely been moments where I finish something and stare at it thinking:
“Wait… I made that?”
Meanwhile Max is standing there like:
“Yeah. Of course you did.”
He never seems surprised.
Even when I am completely baffled by my own abilities, he never is.
And that’s one of the biggest reasons I’m still chasing this dream.
Eventually, life brought Aaron and me back to Nevada and back to Max.
And that’s where Homicidal Cakes was born.
Our first official creation was a blood drip/splatter cake and cupcake set.
And there was never really one big “Holy crap, we’re a business!” moment.
It just kept growing.
One order became another.
One idea became another.
And suddenly this little dream had become something real.
Today, our goal is simple:
We want you to feel heard.
When you come to us with an idea, I want you to know that your wants, your expectations, your theme, your vision, and all those little details you’ve been dreaming about matter.
My goal is to take those ideas and turn them into something you can hold in your hands, put on a table, celebrate with, and eventually eat.
I want to bring your dreams to life in the form of sweet treats.
And honestly, there is no better feeling than hearing from a customer about their child’s reaction to their cake.
When you tell me they saw it and their face lit up…
When you tell me they loved it…
When you tell me that the cake was exactly what they imagined…
That’s the “wow” I’m chasing.
That’s why I do this.
Not just to make cakes.
But to make memories.
And while we’re talking about dreams…
Homicidal Cakes is far from the end of my story.
I’ve already earned my Associate Degree in Baking & Pastry Arts from Auguste Escoffier, and now I’m heading back to school again to pursue my Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management at Bellevue University.
And then?
Maybe, just maybe…
One day we’ll have our very own bakery.
That’s the ultimate dream.
To build this business into something bigger.
To succeed.
To create a place that represents everything we believe in.
Quality over quantity.
Creativity over conformity.
And treating every customer like their order actually matters.
Because it does.
I think about my grandpas a lot when I think about how far I’ve come.
If they could see me right now, today, I know exactly what they’d say.
They’d be proud.
They’d tell me to keep on keeping on.
They’d tell me:
“You’ve got this.”
And I intend to prove them right.
So that’s us.
Schey. Max. Aaron. Madison.
Four people.
One crazy little family.
One slightly homicidal bakery.
And a whole lot of dreams.
Thank you for being here.
Thank you for supporting our small family business.
Thank you for trusting us with your celebrations, your milestones, your birthdays, your holidays, and all the moments that deserve something sweet.
Every order helps us keep chasing this dream.
And we promise to keep bringing you the best quality treats we can make…
one sweet little murder at a time.
Welcome to Homicidal Cakes.
We’re so glad you’re here.
