So… what exactly is hojicha?

🇯🇵 Hojicha is a Japanese roasted green tea. Unlike the vibrant green matcha you already know and love, hojicha tea leaves are roasted at high temperatures, transforming their color and creating a warm, toasted aroma and flavor.

Think roasty, nutty, slightly caramel-like and incredibly smooth. 🤎

🍵 HOJICHA vs. MATCHA

💚 MATCHA Made from shade-grown green tea leaves that are processed and ground into a fine powder. It has that beautiful bright-green color with a rich, vegetal and slightly earthy flavor.

🤎 HOJICHA Green tea leaves are roasted, giving hojicha its gorgeous brown color and mellow, toasted flavor. For lattes, hojicha can also be finely ground into a powder and whisked into the drink.

And here's another interesting difference: hojicha is typically lower in caffeine than matcha, although the exact amount depends on the tea and preparation.

So no — that beautiful brown color isn't coffee or chocolate.
