Wedding cake fiasco 🎬. Y’all wanted the tea, so buckle up!
Let me preface this story by saying that I still think about this on a very regular basis, and this is for educational purposes for all my baby bakers!
Right at 10 years ago I had a wedding consult with a bride, groom & brides parents. When we get down to delivery, they were adamant that they did not want to pay the delivery fee and they wanted to pick up the monstrous 4 tier cake (trust me, I know - that’s why this is a cautionary tale 😅). I explain that delivery is their insurance. It covers not only the delivery of the cake, but another team member to ride along and ensure the cake remains stable. Still adamant, I explained that they must have a van or SUV to transport and at least one other person aside from the driver to sit in the back with the cake to keep it stable and had them sign a delivery waiver.
Fast forward to wedding day - this is where things get sticky. It was a Sunday and my store was closed so I was there with my (very small at the time) kiddos waiting for pickup, and 4 older ladies pull up in a 4 door sedan 😳. All they knew was that they were supposed to pick up a cake, and when I told them it wouldn’t fit in their vehicle they asked if I could take it apart so they could each hold a tier 🥹. I couldn’t get ahold of the mother of the bride or another other contact I had, and my heart could not fathom this bride not having a wedding cake because of a delivery fee issue on her actual wedding day. SO I offered to deliver anyway but told the ladies in the sedan that I was alone so I would do my very best. Call in reinforcements to help me load the cake because I couldn’t lift it alone, and they took my kiddos so I could focus on driving.
