All this Sweet Shop history put me in the mood to go digging in the formula (recipe) box that has been passed down from owner to owner since the 1930s. I decided I would pull one out that hasn't been done since we purchased the bakery 21 years ago. Any guesses on what I pulled out and started working with? Hopefully we will have them perfected and added to the list of available Sweet Shop favorites in time for the holidays!!

Harris Bakery, owned by J.W. Harris is documented as being in downtown Albemarle as early as 1912. There is no mention that can be found if the Harris Bakery became the Albemarle Bakery when it opened on King Ave. but it is a possibility.
In October 1921, T.S. Parker purchased the land at 120 King Ave. and constructed a two story building that would become the Albemarle Bakery in 1922. It is believed that Peter Endres operated the bakery, name unknown from 1922 until February 1934. In August 1927 Peter and Constance Endres purchased the building and lot at 120 King Ave. from T.S. and F.A Parker.
In February 1934 the Whitley family purchased the bakery and property from Peter and Constance Endres. The Whitley family would operate the Albemarle Bakery, Inc. from 1934 until 1960. During this time the bakery was known for its Mary Jane Bread. As you can see from the photo posted, the delivery trucks were labeled with Mary Jane Bread but also show Albemarle Bakery, Inc which was the name of the bakery. The loading dock of the bakery at 120 King Ave. was often full of Mary Jane Bread boxes which held the bread for delivery.
In 1960 the Whitley family changed the name and location of the bakery. It is possible there was a change of ownership within the Whitley family during this transition but that can’t be confirmed. The bakery moved from 120 King Ave. where it was known as the Albemarle Bakery, Inc. to 128 King Ave. where it was now known as the Albemarle Bake Shop.
In 1972 Harold & Sylvia Bagwell along with Henry and Marguerite Fisher purchased the bakery from the Whitley family and changed the name to Albemarle Sweet Shop, Inc. The Fishers were known in the bakery business as they were long time owners of Bitsy Bakery in Kannapolis. It isn’t known when the Fisher’s sold out to the Bagwell’s. The Bagwell’s would eventually be sole owners until they sold the bakery in 1994.
In 1994 Grady “Bud” and Karen Haley purchased the bakery from the Bagwell’s. The name was then changed to Albemarle Sweet Shop Specialties, Inc. The Haley’s would own the bakery until April 2000.
Shawn and Laura Oke purchased the bakery from the Haley family in April 2000. The name was officially S&T Mangement dba Albemarle Sweet Shop. The business would remain a dba until it was changed to Albemarle Sweet Shop, LLC in 2013 where the name remains today.

Thanks to two of our customers who saw our post here we have been able to obtain some awesome historical photos from the bakery days of the past. The first photo is Franklin Mabry outside the bakery probably in the 1950s. The second photo is Franklin's brother C.L. on the left, Harold Bagwell in the middle and Curtis Thompson outside the bakery in 1952. We will continue to share these great pieces of history and hope to one day have them decorating our lobby.

I have a story to share that is a little long but please hang in there and take the time to read it. We often have customers that come in the bakery and pay things forward by purchasing orders for other people. This past week we had a customer come by and explain to us that the birthday of one of their loved ones that had passed away was coming up. They wanted to honor their loved one by purchasing a birthday cake order that had been placed. They also left a card and asked that we give the person getting the pay it forward cake the card.
The decorators searched the orders and found one they thought would fit the bill for what this customer was looking for. They marked the order paid and put the card with the order. The day the order was supposed to be picked up came and the person our decorators chose to get the free cake and card didn’t show up for their cake. We tried to call the person multiple times and the person never answered the phone and we weren’t able to leave a message. Since that cake had been paid for and not picked up the decorators went back through the orders and found another order and marked that order paid and put the card with the order.
When the customer arrived to pick up her order and was told her cake was paid for and presented the card she simply broke down in tears in the bakery lobby.
As Paul Harvey said, ‘Here is the Rest of the Story’: I received the following message the next day via messenger from the person that got the cake. “I would like this message to be read by the two nice ladies that were working in the sweet shop yesterday around 12:00. I am the lady that picked up the cake yesterday and you told me that it had been paid for by someone for me ....If either one of you know this lady personally and know how to reach her I would so much appreciate if you could find it in your heart to give her a call with a message for me ...Tell her she has no idea how much she and her daughters have touched my heart and if she or they could see it to give me a call at 704-***-*** or even look me up on fb under (name removed) and just let me please tell her what their gift has meant to me ...I just want to speak to one of these ladies so so much ...They made me the most blessed birthday that I think I have ever had ...When you walk through the dark trail and God sends a light like this, I just so want to speak to them ..if you see fit then I thank you so much and I would love if you let me know if you could do this ...God bless you all ..... and your cake like always is delicious ....
One of the decorators knows the person that did this so we forwarded the name and number of the person getting the cake to them, just in case they want to reach out and realize the positive impact their pay it forward gesture made. After a follow up message with the person getting the cake to see if she would let me share her story I received this message “I would be honored for you to share this story ..No one has any idea what this meant to me ..I have a large family bible that I keep things in it that has meant so much to me that I plan to be in that family bible when I die ...I told my kids yesterday that this ladies card will be in my family bible when I do pass ..It was that special to me ...She just doesn’t know ....My family lost our two youngest grandchildren in 16 months time ..We all have had a rough few years and then to walk into a surprise like that then all I could do was cry ...So so special..”
I wanted to share this story because so many people do little things for others such as paying it forward and they have no idea of the positive impact their actions have. This pay it forward clearly made a difference and was such an awesome way to honor the family member that passed away. The little positive things we do in life do make a difference and are making our world a better place!! Thank you to each of you that take the time to make a positive difference in the lives of the people you interact with on a daily basis!! The photo is the cake that wasn't picked up which allowed this wonderful story to occur!!!

We Need Your Help!!! We are looking for old photos of the bakery, either inside or outside, for a special project we are working on. We know a lot of people in our community have worked at the bakery and we are hoping some of you might have photos you can share with us. If you have any photos that you are willing to share (we will gladly scan them and return them to you) please let us know.
Here are members of the Bagwell family at the oven sometime in the 1970s.

Yay to Albemarle Sweet Shop for wedding cupcakes!!! We didn't know what would happen with Covid so thought cupcakes would be a safe solution. We also ordered a small round cake to "save" for the 1 year anniversary tradition. It turned out so cute with the cake topper. Thanks so much for always being such a wonderful business and caring about your customers!!

Hi there! I am the owner/dog groomer of Best FURiends spa. I am new to Albemarle. I am reaching out to the local small business owners to let them know I am providing discounts to you, your employees, and friends and families through the winter season. I always provide discounts for first responders, military (active and vets), seniors, and the medical industry (all species 😉). Here is my website if you would like to see what I am about a bit more. https://bestfuriendsspa.wixsite.
Thank you Albemarle Sweet Shop my Cake is Beautiful.
My Grandson, Bobby Speaks-Mills is visiting us from Ottawa, Illinois. I gave him a little background information on The Albemarle Sweet Shop, telling him, "Most every child that grew up in Albemarle, has had at least one clown cookie!" This is his first. Let's just say, he devoured it.
BEST brownie with cream cheese icing! Thanks again! 🤰🏻
What’s better than an Albemarle Sweet Shop clown cookie?? An Albemarle Sweet Shop clown cookie that lost his head making the four hour trip east to Red Oak, NC!! So yummy!!
No matter how quick the trip is, there’s no way I’m coming to Stanly County without Albemarle SweetShop goodies. So thankful they were willing to let me drop by even if they weren’t open. When I told them I would be in town, the response I got was “Well, I can’t let an out of town sweet shop fan come to town and not get their goodies”!
Will you have sticky buns Friday?
