Carmel Bakery, established in 1906, one of Carmel’s oldest running businesses has been owned by the Pèpe family for 25 years. Rich Pèpe started working in his uncle’s bakery in New Jersey at the age of 14 and likes to say, “I’m a baker first, a chef second”. No strangers to getting up early, the motto for Pèpe and his baking crew at Carmel Bakery is “we bake while you sleep”. Equal parts bakery, d

eli, Starbucks Coffee Bar and neighborhood hangout, Carmel Bakery specializes in Scottish shortbread, English scones, Italian biscotti and giant soft Bavarian pretzels. Deli-style sandwiches, house made soups and fresh salads are also served.

One of my most favorite things to bake is cheesecake, and licking the be**er brings me back to my youth growing up working in my neighborhood bakery after school.

My son Gian asked ChatGPT about Little Napoli where we feature this desert, and it turns out she is a fan of our Blueberry Cheesecake! This is what she said:

“Little Napoli is a charming Italian restaurant known for its authentic and traditional cuisine, nestled in the heart of Carmel. As you step into the restaurant, you're greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere that captures the essence of Italian family dining. The decor is cozy and rustic, creating an intimate setting reminiscent of a classic Italian trattoria.
The menu at Little Napoli is a celebration of Italian culinary traditions, featuring a variety of dishes that cater to diverse tastes. You'll find classic pasta dishes, mouth-watering pizzas, and an array of hearty entrees. Each dish is prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients, ensuring a flavorful and satisfying dining experience.
A standout aspect of Little Napoli is its renowned dessert menu, boasting a selection of delectable treats. The Blueberry Cheesecake is a popular choice, known for its creamy texture and rich blueberry topping. For a lighter option, the Limoncello Mousse Cake offers a zesty and refreshing flavor.
Additionally, the restaurant offers a variety of Italian dessert wines and unique liqueurs like Pepecello, an infused limoncello, providing the perfect end to your meal.
Little Napoli is not just about food; it's an experience that encapsulates the joy of Italian dining - a place where every meal feels like a celebration with family and friends”.

Stop by my Carmel Bakery one day and if I’m making cheesecake that day, you can lick the be**er too. Buon Appetito!

Earlier this year we decided to improve our chocolate chip cookie. After dozens of trials, we settled on something new. New chocolate (chunks), different flour mix (texture), all butter (more flavor), new sheet pans (shape), and to finish.

Thanks for noticing Ash!

“It Is To Weep” from the Carmel Pine Cone, 1917. September 20th

No more the famous Carmel Doughnut. A thing of the past is the crooked breakfast snake “made in Carmel.” If you want a Parker House roll, you’ll have to bake it yourself or travel four miles for it.

Reason! Reason Enough! Fritz Schweninger has quit making these delightful delicacies. Carmel is without a bakery, cakery, and pie factory. The Schweningers will give all their attention to their growing grocery business. Wonder if we’ll have any more small boy encampments here?

**We found this old Pine Cone article digging through their archives. Carmel Bakery was closed in 1917 by the original founders so they could focus on their growing grocery business two doors down. Fortunately for us all it reopened in 1920 under new ownership. It has changed hands 4 more times since then, but remains the oldest California bakery in its original location.

The Grand Lady of Carmel is getting a fresh coat of paint. After owning the bakery since the mid-80’s, we are going back to the historical colors of the past. Carmel Bakery was built in 1899 and is the oldest surviving building of that era. This style is called Faux-Victorian and was popular right around the turn of the century. No color photos exit, so we re-imagined what colors may have been used 100 years ago. The town historian was a big help, as was our designer Bob Wecker of The Wecker Group. Costa Painting is doing the final phase. We are proud to own this piece of Carmel’s history.

As we begin to close out 2019, I was lucky to find this photograph from 1919 (one hundred years ago) of a street view in Carmel which includes my Carmel Bakery. The bakery was built and founded in 1899, and still going strong today. Looking southeast up Ocean Avenue from Lincoln Street, this photograph offers a nice glimpse of what the village looked like back then. Carmel Bakery is on the right, with the old car and the two women standing in front of it.
Pat Hathaway, who owns thousands of old photos of the Monterey Peninsula deserves the credit for being the preservationist for these old treasures. His website, caviews.com has many interesting pictures to look through, and many are even for sale.
Oh, and next time you are in downtown Carmel, pop into the bakery and say hello, the coffee is on me!
