A continuation of our series ✨ Taste & Traditions ✨

Today, we’re talking about the bestseller of our cake collection — the legendary Kyiv Cake 🇺🇦🍰

For Ukrainians, this is much more than just a dessert. It’s a story, a tradition, and a piece of home.

The original Kyiv Cake was created in 1956 at a confectionery factory in Kyiv and quickly became one of the city’s most famous symbols. Made with crispy nut meringue layers, rich buttercream, and chocolate, it has a unique texture that’s both light and indulgent.

Growing up in Ukraine, even if you didn’t live in Kyiv, there was one thing everyone knew:

“If you’re going to Kyiv, bring back a Kyiv Cake!” 😄

People would ask friends, relatives, coworkers, or anyone traveling to the capital to bring one home. It was the perfect souvenir, a birthday cake, a holiday centerpiece, and a special treat all at once.

For many Ukrainians, opening that iconic cake box meant that someone had just returned from Kyiv. ❤️

Today, Kyiv Cake remains one of Ukraine’s most beloved desserts and a true culinary symbol of our capital city. 🇺🇦✨

We want to be more than just a place where you grab something delicious 🤍🥖

We want Piece & Freedom Bakery to also be a place where you discover new stories, interesting traditions, and little facts about Ukraine 🇺🇦✨

So today, we’re starting our new series with one of the most important questions:

What does bread mean to Ukrainians? 👀

Honestly… a lot.

In Ukraine we say:
“Bread is the head of everything.”
Meaning bread is the center of the table, the home, and everyday life 🌾

Ukraine has been known for centuries as the “breadbasket of Europe” because of its rich black soil and endless wheat fields.
People on the territory of modern Ukraine were baking and eating bread thousands of years ago — even as far back as 5000 BC ✨

Bread in Ukraine is much more than food.

It’s comfort.
It’s hospitality.
It’s care.
It’s family traditions passed from generation to generation 👵🤍

Grandmothers taught mothers.
Mothers taught daughters and sons.
And fresh bread became something almost every Ukrainian home always had.

There’s even a tradition called “bread and salt” — welcoming important guests with bread as a symbol of warmth, peace, and respect ✨

Ukraine also has different traditional breads for different life moments:
💍 Korovai — wedding bread
🌿 P***a — Easter bread
🎄 Kalach — Christmas bread

And one more important thing — bread was never thrown away.

Older generations in Ukraine treat bread with huge respect.
Even stale bread would be reused somehow: made into croutons, kvas, or something else — anything but wasting it 🤍

And maybe that’s why bread means so much to us in our bakery too.

Because for us…
it’s never just bread.
It’s a piece of home ✨

Graduation season is coming 🎓✨
And for us, it’s such a special and emotional time 🤍

All of us were graduates once too — and many of us right here at Iowa State University 🌪️

In this carousel, you can see some of our own graduation memories 👀

✨ Shalika, co-owner of Piece & Freedom Bakery, received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Iowa State.
✨ Her brother Lalit is also an Iowa State graduate.
✨ Devon as well 🎓
✨ Hanna got her degree at Taras Schevchenko National university of Kyiv
✨ Hannah’s fiancé is currently a student at Iowa State, with his graduation coming very soon 🤍

So yes… this season means a lot to us.

We know how emotional and exciting it feels to finish such an important chapter — whether it’s high school or university.
A new life, new opportunities, new beginnings ✨

And of course… every big moment deserves a beautiful celebration 🍰
