🐥🌾 CHICKS HAVE ARRIVED AT PEPPERBEE FARMS 🌾🐥

Well… we finally did it.

One of Farmer Sam’s longtime farm dreams is officially happening:
🐔 We are raising our own meat chickens.

For those unfamiliar, “meat birds” are chickens specifically bred to grow efficiently and provide a sustainable source of food for families and farms. Raising them ourselves means knowing exactly how they’re cared for every step of the way — fresh air, clean space, and lots of attention from tiny farm assistants.

It’s a whole new learning adventure for us, and honestly a pretty big step toward becoming more self-sufficient as a farm and family.

BUT… that’s not all that came home with us 😅

We also added six Olive Eggers to the flock! 🫒🥚

And yes… they really do lay green eggs.

We’re pretty excited to add a little more color to the egg basket around here. Between the ducks, the chickens, the bees, and Farmer Sam’s inability to say no to animals… things are getting interesting fast. 😂🐝

🦆🐝 Meet Suits 🐝🦆

Because apparently bringing home one random farm animal wasn’t enough…

At the same time we picked up Reaper, Farmer Sam also somehow ended up coming home with this guy — meet Suits. 😅

We’re not totally sure what breed he is, possibly some kind of mixed breed duck, but what we do know is:
✔️ He’s got personality
✔️ He’s ridiculously entertaining
✔️ The kids already absolutely love him

He’s still figuring out his place around the farm, but honestly he’s fitting into the chaos pretty naturally already.

At this point we’ve realized Farmer Sam has a very specific toxic trait:

“Do you want this extra animal too?”

…and him immediately responding:
“Yeah probably.” 🤦🏻‍♂️

He says he’s working on it.
We have our doubts.

Seriously though… when do we stop being PepperBee Farms and start becoming:

🐔🖤 Meet Reaper 🖤🐔

Farmer Sam was left unattended again… and somehow this happened. 😅

Introducing Reaper, the newest feathered addition to PepperBee Farms! We picked this handsome guy up from a local Facebook group and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring such a unique bird to the farm.

We’re not 100% sure on his breed, but he definitely resembles an Ayam Cemani — a rare all-black chicken breed that Sam has been passionate about adding to the farm for quite some time.

And honestly… look at him.
How were we supposed to say no? 🫣

Sam already has plans for this guy, so stay tuned because the poultry side of the farm may be getting a little more interesting soon.

At this point though…
When exactly do we officially become a chicken/duck/fowl sanctuary instead of a farm? 😂🐓🦆🐝

🐔🏠 Farm life reminder: you truly never know what you’re going to come home to.

One minute everything seems normal…
The next minute there’s a chicken standing on top of the shed like she pays the mortgage and owns the place. 😅

At this point we’ve stopped asking questions and just accept that the animals are running things around here now. 🐝💛

🐝🚗 Just checking in…

Does anyone else keep winter feed patties for bees and an extra beekeeping halo/suit in their vehicle at all times?

No?
Just us? 😅

Nothing says “normal family car” quite like:
✔️ Honey sticks rolling around the cupholders
✔️ Bee equipment in the trunk
✔️ Random chicken feed receipts
✔️ A faint smell of sourdough starter and smoke from the smoker

Farm life is weird.
We’ve accepted it. 🐝💛

🐝🌾 A Quick Farm Update 🌾🐝

We wanted to share a little behind-the-scenes of what’s been going on lately at PepperBee Farms.

For the past month, we’ve had to hit pause on sourdough. Between the demands of our day jobs and a few things in the works we’re not quite ready to share yet 🤫, we needed to dial things back for a bit.

The good news — this pause has given us time to focus where it matters most:
👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Spending time with our girls
🔨 Building out parts of the farm that will have a long-term impact
🌱 Setting things up for what’s next

And we’re excited to say… bread will be back in a week or two 🍞✨

In the meantime, we still have a few things available:

🥚 Eggs — now proudly run by our girls, who have officially declared they are taking over the egg business 💪 (so yes… you’d be supporting a woman-owned, next-gen farm operation 😉)

Freshened up the hive this weekend — added a deep box and knocked out a mite treatment to keep things strong going into the season 💪🌱

And… surprise…
Sam suited up this time 😅🐝

Safe to say, things are getting real out here.

Slowly building, learning, and doing our best to give these bees what they need to thrive. More to come 🐝💛

🐝🌱 Winter/Spring Bee Update 🌱🐝

We finally made it out to the hives this weekend to do some work and check on the girls… and we’ve got a bit of a tough update.

Going into winter, we had three hives.
Coming out of winter… we’re down to one.

And not for the reason you’d expect.
Cold? ❄️ Nope.

Mice. 🐭

They can sneak into hives over the winter looking for warmth and shelter, and unfortunately they can cause a lot of damage. That’s what took out two of our hives this year. It’s a hard lesson, but part of learning and growing in beekeeping.

The good news — our third hive is going strong 💪🐝

If all goes well, we’re planning to split that hive in a few months and start building our numbers back up again.

Farm life is full of highs and lows, wins and setbacks… but we keep learning, adapting, and moving forward.
